He says there are no great fighters in his weight class but Chad is undefeated and a belt-holder at Light Heavyweight. Joe is retiring and saying he wishes he had someone at his weight class to fight. Does he really expect every to forget that he is dodging Chad Dawson?
Many reasons. I don't think boxing Dawson would bring a high enough pursue for Calzaghe to have another bout. Also, during the time Joe took to think about his future, he was probably honest with himself & can see Chad is young, hungry, ambitious, & a solid fighter on top of that! Joe is the first to admit that the hunger or motivation to train & keep up the discipline required at this level has waned some-what in recent motnhs, or even years! Calzaghe still has plenty to offer the sport, but the motivation & desire are simply not what they once were!
There's you clue in bold there. Calzaghe basically laid it down after the Jones fight and made it clear that, if anyone else wanted a shot at him they needed to drive a big truck of cash to his door. Dawson has made no offer at all.
I think the post takes issue with Joe saying there is no one to fight at light heavy. Joe said if he was 147 lb he would keep fighting because there are so many fights there. If Joe wants to hang him up I won't tell him not to but I do take issue with him saying there are no people at light heavy for him to fight
Diaconu and Erdei are undefeated too. Bute, Froch, Balzsay also. There's Glen Johnson, the Hopkins, the Kessler rematch... Calzaghe had many options, but after Kessler-Hopkins-Jones, there was no bigtime motivation for him. Dawson might be the best of the undefeated beltholders, but at this point, he's nothing else just another belt-holder, no money on the table, no historical significance, many of us believe anyway that he lost to Johnson, and most of us think he would lose to Calzaghe. Max Kellerman did his part to hype up this fight (after the previous one, Kelly Pavlik got schooled), and it would've been pretty damn good fight, but not the same caliber of the previous 3. Let the man retire if he feels he's done enough. And he did.
Because he'd have to dig deep to beat Chad Dawson. Dawson would be the strongest, fastest, largest fighter he's ever fought. It wouldnt be a limited Kessler, it wouldnt be a Hopkins who gasses down the stretch, it would be a young, tough, boxer. 6'3 natural light heavyweight south paw with lightning fast hands and a sturdy beard. I'd retire too rather then fighting that.
