Why doesn't Cotto fight out of the southpaw stance?

I've seen him fight in the southpaw stance and he's done well for himself.

He's a natural lefty and does about everything left handed ... he also has most of his power come from the left hand ... the right hand isn't as limited as I thought it was but the force and the KO power is coming from the left hand first and foremost.

He likes to line his left to the body out correctly when fighting a conventional fighter.

one of the hardest thigns to do when your a southpaw is do a good body attack.
you can land a body shot of course, but the liver is on the other side of the body. meaning you have to lean over to use your power hand to hit the right side of his body. these leaves you open for a left hook while the sweep away to the left.

besides southpaws fighting inside happens but is fairly rare maybe combo punching but never really a sustained attack.
whitaker and calzaghe are known for fighting on the inside but both stay on the oustide when possible.

He gets the job done as Orthodox, no pressing need to change his stance. He only does so in fights to present a new angle and open things up for a short while.

What about the straight left to the body out of the southpaw stance or the right hook to the body ... I think that Cotto could stop more opponents w/ the straight left out of the southpaw stance than the left hook from the orthodox stance.

I'm not saying that he should change his stance all i'm saying is that - he's effective as a southpaw (during moments in a fight) ... he's a natural lefty ... and he has power in his left hand.

He can't just change now. It's okay as a change up as it confuses the opponent, but if he always fought like that people would figure him out and the unnatural flaws would be glaringly obvious. He's always fought orthodox, left-handed or not that is what he is used to.

Quite simply because his best weapon is the left hook to the body, and the conventional stance allows better positioning to throw it (i.e. closer to the target, not needing to reach to get the angle on the liver shot).

Bro i'm not saying change now ... I'm saying why didn't he just have that as his primary stance?

I'm sure that he's fought southpaw before ... he seems to be good at it ...

A lot of natural lefties fight orthodox, gives them a stronger jab and hook.

I guess he figured pretty early body punching was his strength, and it was easier to get that left hook working against an orthodox fighter. His hooks with the left hand obviously have a lot of power, but at the same time they are very difficult to see coming when he is jabbing well. There is hardly a difference.

He may balance better from orthodox as well... I am stronger as a lefty but feel a whole lot more comfortable right-handed. Even a small difference for him would be big on the world class level.

it makes his jab and hook work easier for him. same for right handed fighters that choose to fight southpaw. works better for their power hand to be their lead hand. they get to keep touching with their stronger hand. and a straight shot down the pipe(left or right) from any halfway decent boxer has plenty of pop anyway.
