He obviously doesn't hit "that" hard

The AJ stoppage was a well placed punch that caused damage to the temple
    Other than that nothing really

His speedy hands however were his best attribute

Andy have fast feet and fast hands so you would think that he should have higher KO% but I think it’s his lack of commitment that’s his problem. Too fat and not enough cardio to keep a high forward pace.

His body is really weird as well, most pictures of him his legs look really weak, he almost looks like he must have some kind of hip/knee problems, other than just being overweight.
Fury looks a bit like that as well, I know his legs have gone a bit but it astounds me that either of them can still move as well as they do

Because he doesn't actually hit very hard. His power is quite average for a heavyweight.

Even average power with his hand speed should give more KO’s.

He's such a wasted talent in my opinion. If he lived the life who knows how good he truly could of been. He suffers from gluttony unfortunately, complete lack of self control.

If he lived the life he would probably be a LHW, but I agree with you.

The mystique of Fat Andy grew well out of proportion (similar in many respects to his gut) with the actuality of him. This is because he beat up a cash cow in Joshua.

Either the legend of Andy had to grow, or the mirage of Joshua had to fall. The marketing machine chose for Andy's legend to grow.

A prime version of this guy went life and death with a completely shot 40 year old Arreola.

Because Ruiz even in his prime was a pretty limited fighter.

Fantastic hand speed, but poor footwork - its easy to run circles around him if you're a half decent fighter.

First off its called a KO rate.

For Ruiz 8 of his 13 decisions were in fights under 10 rounds and 5 of them were speed boxing. So thats the main culprit. Shorter the fight the less likely the winner is to win by stoppage.

Other culprit is fighters don't fight much today. The less a fighter fights the more every individual decision lowers the rate. Ruiz has 35 wins late in his career. If he had 40 or 45 like he would have in a different era he'd gain some points.

KO rate only cares if a fighter got the KO in a win. It does not care how hard the guy hits only whether that outcome happens or it doesn't.

I guess the trade off is he focused on fast combinations rather than sitting down on power shots.

His speed is his greatest threat
    It’s the punch you don’t see coming…

1000% he is lazy & non committed to the highest level.

I think because he's not a real HW, he's a fat LHW at best.
After he TKO'd AJ, the propaganda was that he was a big hitting elite boxer.
The troof is he just had more heart than AJ and landed a lucky punch on the counter after being badly dropped.
AJ basically folded under pressure and then Ruiz never beat a prime contender after that let alone a champion.
AJ losing to a fat LHW who never beat a top fighter was one of the worst HW losses in history for a champion. The size and power and conditioning advantage in that fight was astonishing. You will never again see such a mismatch physically.
