Boxing is what poor men resort to when they need to pay the bills.

Blacks are no longer the poorest people in the world. People from the former Soviet Union are poorer than black Americans nowadays.

I'd chalk it uip to a combination of the following

    1. Large numbers of people from very poor area of the world with a good boxing infrastructure coming into the pro-game at the highest weight divisions.

    2. Boxing going from regular tv to expensive subscription chanels. The average household in the hood don't have the money for HBO, Showtime and 60 dollar ppv's, so poor kids don't see it and don't aspire to be boxers as much as they used to. I honestly think if people wanted to box they would regardless of better financial deals available in other sports. Otherwise everyone in England would play football, no one would go into boxing/rugby/cricket. Poor kids from tough areas have always been boxings main participants wherever you go in the world.

    3. Boxing being so un-pc these days gyms go unfunded and are closing. I read NYC has gone from 100 gyms in the 50's to about a dozen now. With nowhere to learn no one can box.

    4. Americas amateur boxing has plunged in quality since the 80's. Being a good amateur doesn't guarantee being a good pro but it's as good a leg up as you can get.

Im going to cut through all the crap. American Heavies just arent that good anymore. they arent disciplined due to the fact that there is no heavyweight limit, so theres no motivation to train or diet so match that with the lack of commitment to technique and conditioning.

    America just got Lazy

it's not racial biased. I didn't mention race in my post, I only mentioned Americans in general. We got some athletic white boys in America too

How about the fact that this thread has been done too many times. You know the reasons, stop asking the question?

Popularity of boxing has declined in the inner city . . . more kids want to be like mike (jordan) than Mike (tyson)

More money in other sports BBall and football compared to what was offered back in the day.

the decline is throughout all of boxing but more so in the heavier divisions

I agree with pieces of most posts re the black decline, but one thing, how unfit and overweight do the active hws look? It seems an obsession with being heavy at the expense of fitness, but at the same token, wher are the decent white heavies? Our expectations for black athletes is much higher given their genetic advantages and sooner or later another champion will come along.

It's not really the cool thing to be a fighter in the black community anymore. I mean, it's great while your on top, but in the end it seems like most of our recent (80s-90s) fighters end up punch drunk and/ or broke (Meldrick Taylor, Hearns, Holyfield, Tyson, Toney, Bowe etc). There are far better alternatives these days.
