Why don't fighters just throw the over hand right against the shoulder roll?

I have a related question for everyone:

Watch Marquez taking out Pac. The best counter-punch in recent memory, we can all agree.

To me, it looks like a low OH right. His elbow is WAY up. Yet, in an interview, Juan specifically says it was somewhere between a right cross and a straight right. (Maybe it depends on the angle that you see it at?)

This one is bordeline, but to me you HAVE to call it an OH, even though it doesn't come from too far back.
Still, I'm not about to argue with Marquez!

    What do you guys think?

Left hook is a better punch against that type of defence. Cotto hit Mayweather with some good left hooks when he was using shoulder roll.

Exactly. :deal (as I wrote, earlier.)

Gatti tried the OH right against Mayweather, many times, and paid dearly for it. So did lots of other guys.

The only fighter I can think of who was able to land the OH right against Floyd without suffering painful counters, was Zab Judah. (There may be others, I haven't seen every Mayweather fight) - But realize that Judah had very fast hands. So, there you go .... Also, Judah almost always threw it in combinations, making it harder to counter safely.

Tommy hearns is the 2nd goat at 147 h2h. Only guy higher is SRR.

I think it's on the border line between a cross and a (short) overhand right.

Pac was very close when Marquez's glove made contact.

Marquez's arm is not fully extended, so the cross is somewhat incomplete at impact.

If Pac didn't fall into the punch and was, instead, hit at a greater distance, it probably would have looked more like a traditional right cross.

So I have no problem with Marquez calling it a right cross.

As you said... I wouldn't argue with him.

Sorry. I forgot my password. But I asked my coach and a top sparring partner for Roy Jones Jr and he said Hearns will beat Floyd easily in a h2h. Hence overhand right will defeat any version of the shoulder roll. It's easy work for Hearns. Easy work. No money down. Hearns will make Floyd his Leonard Ellerbe.

So far the Poll has proven my theory correct. The Overhand Right is a great counter to the shoulder roll. Good to see ESB intelligent.

Are you serious? Hearn's money punch is the overhand right. Mayweather's money defense is the shoulder roll.
I mean are you seriously that thick?

Hearns is the toughest match up at WW ever. He beats nearly any fighter at 147. If Prime Hearns v. Prime Leonard fought at WW 10 times 5-5 or 6-4 would be my best guess. Leonard only beat Hearns at 147 because of his combination of power, skill and speed.

Overhand rights are not very effective against a good philly shell because you have to throw them at a suboptimal angle to get over the shoulder and then they have no power and are easy to slip. Ortiz tried it a bunch against Mayweather when they were clinched.

    Maybe. I still disagree, though:

Right hook to the body is better imo. Left hook wont land unless you feint or hook off the jab or end it on a combo or somethng. Overhand right or any right will land if its timed or set up properly.
