I know a minute isn't a long time, but why don't we see fighters refuelling during rounds with some sort of quick acting energy food? Like those gels that tennis players consume. Is it just a case that if they start taking them from say round 5 for example, is 24 minutes too little a time to reap any sort of benefit?
Partly that it probably wouldnt have effect quick enough. Tennis players are in matches that are hours long. Also, most commissions have very tough rules about what fighters can/cannot take in between rounds. Its pretty much just water for a lot of them
It's against the rules? And you don't want fighters refueling given the nature of boxing. You don't want fights going longer than they have to because the fighters will accumulate too much lasting damage.
You don't have time to digest the food between rounds and getting hit in the stomach right after eating may bring the food up.
In a somewhat related topic, I always wondered why fighters drink so little water in between rounds. They only take a small sip. That is in stark contrast to almost any other sport, where athletes down a lot of liquid in between breaks. Why is that?
Have you ever exercised? Tell me what happens when you take a big drink then exercise for 3 mins. Floyd Sr. would never let his fighters drink during fights because it makes them tired always spit it out (no homo)
Yeah I do. But the amount of liquid they lose in 3 minutes does not equal the amount of water they put back into their bodies.
No way you can intake that amount of food/liquid in a minute. The digestive system surely grinds to a halt during intense exercise.
It would get very complicated. People would accuse others of wrong doing and eating while fighting would do you no favours anyway.
No time to digest it... get hit with a body shot 10 seconds after eating something, wouldn't be good now would it.
