And Besides betting against yourself then losing makes it look like a fixed fight which I am definitely sure is illegal.

 

I was thinking about it the other way around. Why dont fighters who are the favorites just bet their whole purse on themselves?

I mean there is alot of fights where the winner is pretty obvious and if they arent getting such a big purse why not bet it on themselves since i believe that is legal to make more money?

 

There's nothing unsporting or potentially compromising to the spirit of competition about that, and it probably happens all the time.

Its illegal I think. However they could obviously give their friend or someone the money to put the bet on to be discrete.

 

If I remember right, in one fight back when it was allowed by the network, he had an ad written on his back in black. He was give so much money for this, and he bet the whole amount on the same site for the win.
The first time, the ink came off mid-fight! They improved the ink after...but now the networks (or commission??) does not allow this type of "advertising"

There was also controversy in another Hopkins fight. He bet $50,000 (??)with Joppy that Joppy would not survive until the end of the fight. This put added pressure on Joppy's corner not to stop the fight...and he and his face took a horrible beating.

 

it is illegal but your question applies to all sports and also the stock exchange (insider trading).

yeah people do it and i am sure boxing is dirty as sin.
