Just to clear this up. It's not n effective punch with gloves on. It's more effective bare knuckle. Keep in mind that if you kill someone with that punch you will go to prison for manslaughter. It's best that in any situation that is not life or death that you control yourself or spend the rest of your life in prison fighting in life or death situations beyond your control. Here is a clean fight that admire for example

Nothing wrong with a good old temple shot if its open.

My sister and I used to practice temple shots on each other when we were kids.

You leave yourself a bit open if you use it as a lead shot. Much better to use it when you have an opponent hurt or reeling. As said, its not that effective gloved up unless you are a hard puncher.

Stevenson left cross to the temple when he face southpaws does insane damage if Stevenson was a righty he would be unstoppable

A punch aimed for the temple is easier to slip than a punch aimed to the chin.

Not with gloves on it isn't no, a temple shot with gloves on doesn't scramble you as much as some would think

With gloves on its better to hit your opponent a good shot in the ear, that can really mess up your balance and equilibreum & if you catch one in the ear & then in the chin it can have you in all sorts of trouble

When you get caught in the temple with a boxing glove on because of the surface area of the glove and the temple only being a slight indent its just like taking a shot to the forehead or something like that, & it won't nessecarily push your head to one side like a decent shot to the jaw will

As mentioned above though, in bareknuckle a temple shot is very effective but can also kill your man, so a very dangerous shot, the knuckles are exactly the right size to get right in that slight area where the temple is & will hit only the temple, whereas a boxing glove will hit over the temple more than anything, will catch you from your cheekbone to a little bit above your eye socket

A really hard punch in the temple can obviously rock you with boxing gloves on, its still a punch after all, but generally to knock someone off balance a shot to the ear or to the very top side of the head with a glove on will make someone unsteady, and of course the jaw but bare knuckle temple shots are lethal

I know from personal experience that I would often hurt my hands if I missed my target and hit someone high on the forehead. Since the temple is so close to the hard bone around the head I'd say that may be a reason why it's not so popular.

Tyson's shot against Berbick was a classic temple shot
