Especially someone like Malignaggi. Paulie attempts to throw proper punches, so this doesn't allow him to throw as many as Calzaghe does....and also, it means his right hand is susceptible to breaking which puts him off throwing it. So why doesn't he copy the 'slap' style, which would protect his hands and instead of throwing single feather shots, he could throw punches in bunches which have more of an effect.
Calzaghe spends huge chunks of any given fight off balance. The skill and athleticism this involves isn't something that just anyone can pull off. It's a horrible style to learn and perhaps an impossible one to teach. For starters.
Trying to copy Calzaghe would be ****ing suicide for most fighters. He does so much wrong but it happens to work for him due to his fantastic speed, talent, footwork, durability and stamina. Without lightening speed and durability a guy taht tries to fight like Ali is going to get nowhere. Without a huge punch a guy that tries to fight like George foreman is ****ed. Without a great jab a guy that tries to fight like Holmes is screwed. Likewise without Calzaghe's ample gifts trying to fight like him would get you beaten.
Because you can't do it if you dont have the talent for it. IE. Stamina, skills, strength and a very good chin.
Calzaghe's style is ****ing impossible to replicate. NOTHING is orthodox, hell, nothing is even remotely textbook or really boxing to begin with. Not to mention you need a combination of blinding handspeed, footspeed, footwork, tactical knowledge, reflexes, stamina, a great chin, general boxing intelligence. Say what you want about Joe, but he has one in a million style that is pretty much unique in the history of the sport. Its part of what makes him an ATG.
I used to think the same about RJJ, and interestingly enough, you see more and more people dropping their lefts lower and lower, though no one seems to be doing the praying mantis thing. thing is the new users of the style usually get tagged anyway with their defenses down. he used to be fast enough to basically pull off no defensive block. anyway yeah i wonder if we'll see more of JC style fighting? i just have not seen anyone close to approaching that particular style, ever. it's like another dimension. ever wonder why no one can play like jimi hendrix?
I was going to mention the same thing about RJJ, I have noticed that also, fighters like Jean Pascal, David Haye, Sergio Martinez, that have fast hands and drop their left. I hate seeing that personally, just as it such a defensive lapse and you have to have such excellent reflexes not to get tagged. You are setting yourself up for disaster There is only one Roy Jones Junior, just as their is only one Joe Calzaghe. I would never recommend anyone try to mimic a style such as theirs. Ylu
Because not everyone has those physical abilities, if it was easily done you would see MANY similar to Calzaghe/Jones/Ali/Tyson..etc already.
Because only Calzaghe can fight that way. ****, while we're at it, why don't more people fight like Tyson?
Calzaghe has exceptional levels of fitness and stamina, really extraordinary, he also has a good chin, so if you can't know the guy out, he will always win on points because he outworks his opponent by a long way.
:yep I laugh, but its not true. Lacy and Kessler were very dangerous opponents at the time. Hopkins was no push over either.
