Why don't refs score anymore

They have another job to do.

 

The two judges, referee should have always been retained IMO. "They have another job to do?" There are millions of jobs that require 'multi-tasking' much more difficult than a referee judging a fight. Many times, throughout the years, the ref was the sole judge in fights. He's right there, he sees (and hears) the shots. He sees the eyes of the combatants. Often the blood is on him. With a referee judging a fight, many contests would have ended differently. One example: Young would have beaten Norton.
My $0.02 on this.

 

I multi-task at my job, as I'm sure you do. My job isn't protecting people's well-being, however. I stand by that. His job is his job. He can't have one eye on scoring and do that effectively while concentrating on the rest of it.

 

Because they screwed it up too many times. Arthur Mercante's scoring was at times awful. Ask Kenneth Norton or Floyd Patterson.

 

Mercante had some ridiculous system where he broke each round into three separate one-minute intervals, I think.

 

In thinking about this further I really don't think this as 'multi-tasking'; more like performing your job requirements. Harry Gibbs was a fine referee who often solely judged fights. He separated fighters when needed, warned fighters when needed and had his eye clearly on 'punch count', reactions from fighters, etc. Often Harry would give a fighter a 1/4 point victory in England and, usually, no one complained.
That's doing your job and doing it well!

 

I sat next to Harry a couple of times very nice man and an honest one,he rarely gave even rounds.

 

It's cool if we differ in opinion on this...….I'm sure there are always going to be the Harry Gibbs of the world who are really good at it and no harm comes to anyone because he has to split duties. There might even be another Harry Gibbs type out there who could be good too. Maybe even another. My point is that if you make it a systemic thing to where each referee must also be a judge, you're inviting trouble. Not everyone is going to be all Harry Gibbs about it. There are those who can barely do the one job they have. And given that, when you're talking the gravity and level of responsibility a referee has in a boxing ring, I'd rather take that element of risk out of the equation.

 

They still do it routinely in UK boxing, which you would know if you weren't such a **** ant casual fan.

Ah yes, I recall first hearing this comeback when I was in second grade. I didn't find it particularly intelligent sounding then either.
