    @Brixton Bomber

NO, that's not what it says and well you know it.

people didn't look normal because of the TECHNOLOGY, which didn't capture movement properly, and as the years progressed it improved... poor operators in 'those' instances made it worse...

as old Burt Bienstock used to say, "People used to walk the same, eat the same, S hi t the same, run the same, FIGHT the same and Fook the same, believe it, irrespective of what film footage caught!"

and of course when Film TECHNOLOGY Improved the fighters were seen better/Normal!!!

If true, all of that would tend to make Walcott an even less sensible anchor point for Perry's screed about the decline of heavyweight boxing.

I don't see what fights that were made during these decades that weren't made during later decades. I see which weren't made though.

This is exactly what ignorant young whippersnappers like Brixton Bomber and Kool Kevin don't understand. They look at stuff like this:

and think it looks like two sloppy bar room brawlers when the reality is far closer to this:

    https://streamable.com/24ots

as Perry, who was there at ringside, can no doubt verify.

    It's over Ovah!

Thistle is on the money. The poor film quality makes technical boxing expertise hard to follow. Typically someone has to point it out for most to see. Such as the slipping of punches by Dempsey, subltle feints, short punching. Adding to this old timers were masters of the finer points of the game which as not as easily noticed with silient era film.

LOL!! Baer-Galento makes me laugh every time. Check out the Tua-like hook Galento unleashes in this clip and watch how Baer expertly keeps his height and maintains distance and the optimal fighting range against his short, fat, slow opponent: https://streamable.com/xmdd

Man, if only they'd had better cameras when they filmed this fight.

Yes, that's why it's excellent to have an elder gent like yourself pointing out the intricacies of slapping backhands and off balance haymakers which the poor quality footage of the time just doesn't do justice to.

Tremendous! And the follow up a hook a couple of thousand milliseconds later would have crushed houses!!

It sickens me that people might misinterpret such displays of skill, finesse and power.

Was it true that seconds were shorter back in your day? And that referees used to count in random order, to further confuse the stricken foe?

If Zuo Shiming held his hands that low in the 2030's era, they'd boo him out the garden.

Yeah, they clearly don't recognize the incredible evolution of boxing skill that took place.

Can't they see that this is a B-52 compared to a propeller plane? Sheesh.

but you guys are missing the "finer points." The old cameras are what makes the old fighters look off balance, and it causes their punches to look like slaps instead of the vicious blows that the sports writers wrote about. Those old cameras even made it appear that the old fighters didn't know how to bend their knees and it makes them look like they're standing straight legged and throwing wild arm punches. Obviously the old cameras are to blame, "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" Just read what the nostalgists tell you and believe that Jim Braddock could beat Evander Holyfield.

Clearly they don't recognize the evolution of the jab, which occurred when Sonny Liston made the incredible discovery that you should actually punch explosively, rather then push your arm out. Changed the game forever.
All the best trainers, Arcel, Futch, signed up for private lessons with Liston to learn about this new mechanic.

Thank god we have modern fighters like Lewis and Tua, who are way too advanced to push a jab out.
