I am a huge bas rutten fan. A great fighter, personality, commentator ect., But when he teamed up with kimbo, i thought holy **** Bas is gonna turn this guy into a beast and then we saw the result. Why is it i never see Bas in a great fighter's corner, is he just too new to the coaching game or are his techniques really not the best? I think his instructional dvds are amazing and other respected mma fighters have said the same, so why is he not training the best?
He mentioned in an interview that kimbo had no heart and wasn't willing to learn. To answer your question though, I think it might be because the game has evolved since his time and he hasn't kept up.
I also heard this... however when i watched TUF Kimbo was first in and last out and everyone said how willing he was to learn :huh As much as i like El Guapo sometimes i think he puts BS out there so he doesn't look bad... :think Lycnhburg
That could be true but, we never saw any kinda mma game from kimbo. Let's be honest with ourselves though, kimbo had no talent to begin with :yep
First, stop signing your ****ing posts. Easy sign of a douchebag. And as far as your first point...there's a big difference between having a camera on you while training knowing that it'll be seen on T.V. and being in a gym where the only thing people will see is the end product.
good question man, who knows maybe he is not that great of a coach and more like a jordan type. A great player but not have a knack for coaching.
First, stop using the word douchebag. Easy sign of a ****. Second, don't start a sentence with the word and... :good Lynchburg
In his heyday Bas had Mark Kerr, Rico Rodriguez, and Pedro Rizzo training with him. Rodriguez was not only a jiujitsu world champion but the uFC heavyweight champion. So he does have a history of training world champions. And to the comment that Bas hasn't kept up with the times I think that is a complete falsehood. Rutten was a pioneer in mixed martial arts training. He helped create the cross training template that is in use today.
On the Reem documentary Overeem was saying he used to show up at Bas' gym and challenge him. But could never sub him. He would go away and train and get better and then come back for another go. But still never made quit. Bas must have the knowledge and experience to train the top level fighters if you are talking about all round MMA skills. You wouldn't call him a specialist in one area or another. But I am sure he has the goods to train fighters to the highest level.
i think he trained nick diaz in his early days too. or it might have been either marc laimon or jake shields :think
You cannot really use Kimbo as a measuring stick for Bas's coaching credentials. You cannot turn a backyard brawler who is already in his 30s in to a mixed martial artist overnight. I mean top fighters spend the best part of their lives training in martial arts, boxing etc and even then, it's not easy to get to the top. What were people expecting from Kimbo? You could give him the best coach in the world and he still would have had an uphill struggle to carve out any decent career in the sport, let alone challenge for titles. But the topic start does have a point and I have wondered the same thing. Bas seems to know his ****, but yet not seem him develop many up and comers into stars. Maybe the full on coaching thing really isn't his thing, and keeps his involvement in training fighters to a minimum.
