I wasn't aware that fans outside of UK actually "buy into" Haye, and I wasn't aware he had such a great following. I would say by and large people can't stand Haye, but that's just me.
The thread starter has a point, after Mr. Haye pulverized World class opponents Audley, Valuev and Ruiz in amazing fashion I honestly have to look twice to make sure i'm not watching a young Tyson. In fact why stop there, I would say Haye is more exciting and better than past fighters like Ali, Foreman, Louis and lennox combined never mind the Klitschko brothers.
i wouldnt say i bought into him/ but he can punch and when you can punch you are always in the fight.........ask corrie sanders....ask mike weaver........
As the sport's heavyweight division has always been my main focus, when I entered the boxing, I read the previous fighters. Boom around me Tyson, followed by the war and Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis ruled Bowie - all the great things. But then part of the past decade, the Division has been in the doldrums, I just did not find Klitschkos must see. I have seen the most heavyweight battle history, but I just do not want to watch him. A good fighter, he is a credit champion, but he was dull to watch.
"Why fans bought into David Haye" Because their lives are empty and even fake heroes provide some 'content'.
I can't see why people hate David Haye; he was undisputed Cruiserweight champ and has gone up to heavyweight, won a title and is now facing Wladimir Klitschko just like he said he would. Whatever the outcome of the fight it's gonna be good either way. If Haye smashes Wlad it will add some excitement to the division and he can then go on to face Vitali; if he loses all the people who hate him will enjoy seeing him laid out on the canvas and see him eat humble pie afterwards. For the neutral fan it's gonna be great either way!
Boxing, in terms of global audience, wins if Haye wins. But he won't. We have some very intelligent pundits who believe that Wladimir Klitschko represents a threat to any boxer, of all time. While he will never establish the legacy of the Ali/Frazier/Foreman or Joe Louis style of fighter, nor did Rocky Marciano though - because he never had the established fighters to beat during his time at the top. So while he'll never be a sentimental/legacy ATG - his H2H status can't be denied by any rational person. He's a Top 5 fighter, at the very least, H2H.
Your analyze is wrong. The problem with the heavy weight division is that the K'brothers lack competition. Every time a real challenge comes around, the world wide response is enormous. Vitaly vs Lewis and Wlad vs Haye is two obvious examples. This is only to be expected, since fights between top dogs is what the sport is all about. With your argumentation you create the image of Wlad oppressing the division and Haye trying to save it. This image has nothing with reality to do. Truth is that they both contribute to the sport in a way no other HW does. As boxing stars and champs they are equal. You could even say they resemble each other. Both are national stars but internationally few cares. Both are professional athlets that comes to win, and they both produce vicous knock outs. Saying that Haye is charismatic is a personal opinion. I find him dull. He says the same stuff that every other boxer do. "He is a bum", "He has only fought bums", "I will knock him out." I rarely read his comments. Wlad is good for boxing. And so is Haye. No mather how logic is twisted, this wont change.
even as a "pathetic shell of a man" he is more respected and loved by people than you can ever dream of being the dude is a global icon....even if youve never seen a boxing match you know ali
