Why Floyd is so much more popular than Rigondeaux?

Mayweather and Rigo are both defensive counter-punchers, but people say that Rigo is just boring with his style, however Floyd is the biggest PPV star with literally the same style. Is it just being American and trash-talker what makes you so popular?

floyd speaks english and has a IN YOUR FACE personality, he gets alot of negative attention because of this act (he always talks about a fighter post fight saying all that talk was to promote the fight). but negative attention is attention none the less its basically one big viral campaign. iv seen this first hand, in australia boxing has one of the worst followings and even the non followers know who floyd is and most dont like him they all want to see him get knocked out and like floyd says those people will keep tuning in and keep buying

floyd and rigo are easily my fav fighters to watch (not so much mayweather lately as i feel his age is really making his style look less crisp and satisfying to watch). i try and emulate alot of what rigo does in the gym to very very little success which makes me appreciate him all the more

the one thing id say floyd does better then rigo inside the ring is that he will actually build up the pressure as the fight goes on and floyd naturally starts to take control he will start to walk a fighter down and see if he can hurt them (guerrero r7, cotto 11 and 12, mosley from basically round 3 or 4 onwards, ortiz r4) but with rigo he refuses to do that, i understand against a dangerous guy like donaire you dont wanna get careless and chase for a knockout but against agbeko the punchstats in one of the middle to late rounds showed him throwing like 3 or 4 punches in a round HE WENT COMPLETELY SURVIVAL and rigo just pitty patted on him. i really feel rigo could have got his man out of there or atleast put on a hurt

Great answer, it's true about the inactivity of Rigo, he really should go more for KO against guys like Agbeko, but at the same time we cannot know how much spent was Rigo, maybe he just doesn't have enough energy to being more aggressive.

There is a guy, Lomachenko, who is like a more spectacular more aggressive version of Rigo, but he also doesn't speak English. I think it's quite a shame that promotion of fights plays such a high role in today's boxing because Rigo is at least as talented as Mayweather and for me he is level above Floyd in boxing mastery, but just doesn't get enough credit. Sorry for average English, I'm not from USA:good

We haven't seen Rigo's inside game or whether he can adapt.
At present he has been sensational, but has only shown us one dimension. Is there another dimension and can he adapt under pressure? We know Floyd can adapt under pressure - and he has multiple dimensions to his game.

I agree Rigo might be a better 'pure boxer' than Mayweather, but pure boxing is only one dimension of the boxing game. Mayweather has mastered all dimensions and mastered them very well.

If we're going by fighting style, Floyd throws more punches and makes much better fights. He's been in some very exciting fights throughout his career. Rigondeaux hasn't been in a single good fight in his life. He's an inactive spoiler. No one wants to see him fight.

The messed up part about it is...
IF Rigo's personality could translate over people would love him...
Sure inside the ring and immediately right after a fight he is stoic as fucc.

But, Rigo is as confident if not more so than is Floyd & he can also be pretty vicious with the words aswell. +dude can spit on (Rap) the mic. Google that ****.

    It's a shame he don't translate.

Rigo is Cuban. He can't promote himself the way Floyd does. If he said half the **** Floyd says they'd hand his ass back to Fidel.

If Floyd was from Japan nobody would give a rat's ass about him. Floyd is big in the US because he's American.

The only similarity between Mayweather and Rigo is that both get there offense primarily through counter punching that's it. Rigo is an outside fighter that looks to maintain a certain distance, lure you to sleep with his foot movement while picking his shots from range. Rigo has really only shown the ability to fight from a distance. Mayweather while a counter puncher likes others have stated has more layers, over the course of one fight you see Mayweather going forward/backwards inside in the pocket/on the ropes ect..
The biggest difference is there defense Rigo's defense is his foot movement being able to back away and escape Mayweather's defense comes mostly from timing knowing when to block/duck he can stand in front of you and make you feel like he's a 1, 000 miles away Rigo's defense is basically staying 1, 000 miles away.

Rigo is skilled but boring as hell and makes Mayweather look like Tyson by comparison Mayweather has plenty of good fights like the Maidana/Cotto yet every Rigo fight looks like May-Baldomir
Popularity wise Mayweather is more entertaining in and out the ring and has been in big fights for almost 2 decades Rigo only has 13 pro fights not enough material out for fans to see.

Speaking English and most importantly being american are two of the reasons Floyd is so popular but more importantly is the fact that the Americans have been starved of a world class heavyweight champion of there own . Floyd would not be the no1 american boxing super star if they had say a Tyson or Frazier or Holmes even a foreman or Holyfield .

Of course Floyd's resume is much bigger than Rigo's, but except Hatton, Canelo and Corrales he never fought fighters that were on dominant rail, and of course he still haven't fought his biggest rival Manny Pacquiao. As for Rigo, he had no problems to take a fight against the fighter of the year Nonito Donaire, the guy who was dominating devision at that time, and Rigo easily schooled him.

And if we are comparing their amateur careers, Rigo is 475-12 and Floyd is 84-6. Not tough to see who has greater percentage of wins...And both of them are in shadow of Lomachenko who is 396-1.
