Cotto said it multiple times; he brings Cotto confidence and makes him believe in himself. I think this is the biggest attribute that great coaches bring to their athletes.

Obviously technique is important but having abundant experience in their field and the ability to motivate and give them self-confidence are what separates the great coaches from the rest.

Great coaches like Steward, D'Amato, Futch and Roach all have these attributes that help their athletes fulfill their potentials.

He's not a great trainer but a good one when focused. Great trainers don't **** away 5 champs bestowed on him by a promoter...

That is a good quality, but like any trainer, he needs the right fighter.

    Freddie's Dilema

Manny Oh Manny boxing's saving grace
who got punked by Money when his ass got a taste
of straight rights and movement from decades gone by
As sweet science makes ez work of the Lil Roaches sad lies

A KO's in site for Manny said Roach
But Manny could hardly fight on this level we note
Money brought a level known only by the past great masters
and Freddie and Manny again became a disaster

    The End

He's not a manager, adviser or promoter to indulge in other aspects of his fighter's careers. He's a trainer and that's it.

Hes a good trainer. But his fight plan with the pac-Floyd fight was horrendous. You don't box Floyd LOL

Also no trainer understands as well as Roach the importance of draining the opponent so he comes into the ring with no power.

How many times has Freddie been voted Trainer of the Year by his peers George??? He was the protégé of Eddie Papa Smurf Futch one of the best in the business & Freddie is STILL the best trainer active today by far:happy

He was downright clueless in the Mayweather fight with no meaningful advice. Why was that? :huh

One thing I do notice is that he is way more vocal with Miguel Cotto in fights than with Manny.

With Cotto he actually gives advice, with Manny he just like mumbles a bit, and doesn't give much instruction.

He gave Cotto very good advice in the fight, great trainer.

Another good aspect of Roach is that he brings quality fighters to spar with his fighters.
