Why has Anthony Joshua been looking so happy following his defeat to Daniel Dubois?

Should a boxer who loses never be happy again?

Should there be a ‘proper’ period of mourning and public shame?

It’s an athletic contest. Except for the odd draw, there’s a winner and a loser. Same as in any other sport.

Some people (most of whom lack the minerals to even spar, much less get in the ring against a live opponent) take an odd pleasure in ridiculing people who committed the crime of losing a boxing match.

    I’ll never get it.

I’m not an AJ fan. Felt he was overhyped and overrated. But what’s the point of this kind of thread? ‘How dare he smile, he lost a fight some period of time ago!’

    SMFH.

I won’t underestimate this. Given they have common opponents and Fury hasn’t fared better, that must help with his outlook as fury is really his main competitor and contemporary. Wilder has been out of the picture for a while now. And he can argue Dubois is part of new generation. Ageing fighters routinely lose to good up and coming so no shame there lol

Look up the 'demographics' with the highest rates of depression/suicide etc. and you'll see why he's happy go lucky.
Let's just say he's not going to be a Japanese salaryman hanging himself under Mount Fuji because he can find no point to his meaningless, senseless modern life.
In fact, I'm sure AJ could teach some of these Japanese corporate men a few things about dat bidniss life. Maybe he can do a speaking tour and inspire Japanese salarymen to keep going.

    Well said.

to fighters, it is depressing, it rips your heart out etc. but it’s part of the game.

to casuals they want to ridicule it, ridicule you if you got wobbled or dropped, ridicule you if lose, ridicule you if aren’t the best in the world.

as if the said casual is the best in the world at what they do for a living.

Or because Fury is ducking AJ and AJ knows it. Small mental victory.

Why? Because in the big scheme of things he has had a top career, a career that Dubois doesn't even have time to match. Plus he is rich AF, healthy, so life is good.

Maybe he just couldn't give a ducks fart anymore, he's played the game, made a ton of money and is almost ready to walk off into the sunset.

I think he can just be himself and the pressure is off

I think his great meltdown following usyk was the realisation he can never be the best, when he believed otherwise. It harmed his ego, but to his credit he ploughed on and still fights when he doesn't have to. Whereas 'the fighting man' ran into retirement when he lost

I was a fan of Fury first and would still probably support him if he fought Aj. However, despite his courage in the ring, he doesn't have the balls or maturity of Aj.

It takes great maturity and self growth to accept something, no matter how much it hurts. Aj has accepted his standing in the sport and come to terms with it. While Fury is huffing and crying that he was robbed vs usyk which us delusional. He KNOWS he lost, but his ego can't accept truth, he would rather create a lie. Fury must love Shutter Island!

Do I like Aj now? No, I don't particularly like him or will ever be a fan but I respect him and how he carries himself

I like what you said, but I do not believe a fighter must embrace defeat.

I’ll be honest, the first I heard of this expectation of fighters to accept defeat was when wilder was beaten by fury. I hear it now usyk beat fury, but less. I still don’t understand the expectation on anyone to embrace defeat.

they are fighters, winners, they fight for pride, they reached the top. They gave it their all and lost. What more do you want from them? To come out and publicly state a rival is better than them? For what purpose? To make some reporter or public happy?

In any sport, accepting a competitor who is similar to you as better than you is a difficult thing and I wouldn’t advise it. You may aswell quit.
Some sports people (probably most) need the delusional self belief to win. Especially fighters, you have to truly believe in yourself.
To give up on that brings you closer to the end.

this doesn’t mean you can’t go back to gym and work on things.

He’s accepted he’s not going to be a champ again. He’s accepted that he’s going to have another 2 fights or so as cash outs, then move onto other things. Hell, he may have already had preliminary talks about what those other things are (given how important the British audience is these days, how much they like him, and that he does seem to have 100% of his marbles still there, I could see him having a cushy job as a commentator / host for years with DAZN or whatever).

the difficult part for him is coming to an end. The easy part is about to start. He knows that. That’s why he’s more relaxed.
