Why has Cotto received so many opportunities to fight for a title following defeats?

Cotto should have one of these for getting so many shots.

Huh. Pretty sure there are many people (at least British people) that consider Froch a borderline ATG.

He was a star who filled arenas. People wanted to fight him, especially if they thought he was beatable. For example, Sergio actually thought Cotto was a big payday (correct) and a cherry pick from a lower weight division he would KO (wrong).

I feel like Cotto is going to be paradoxically overrated and underrated as much in retirement as while he was active.

I think Cotto is on the Hatton level, both World Class but slightly below elite. That would have been one hell of a fight between those two. Damn, talk about brutal and ugly.

Fair assessment and yes it would've. Talking 140, mutual primes? Gun to my head, Cotto via body shot KO. (maybe climbing off the canvas first)

He had a good run on the way to becoming a two-weight titlist, which grew a big, reliable fanbase, and he was a network darling. There isn't much more to it than that.

That and, you know, winning in 20 world title fights.

140 I think Hatton stops him late just through this relentless work rate and would overwhelm cotto With Miguel flagging at the end cos of the brutal weight cut

147 I think cotto takes it in savage fashion

This fight would of been absolutely epically brutal though

I edited my post just moments too late for your quote. ;-)

I slightly favour the 140lb Hatton by UD, Cotto at 147lb KO's Hatton. 140lb Hatton was a machine and Cotto seems to gas late, vs an aggressive body-puncher like Hatton I think he'll win the rounds by wearing Cotto down but not finishing him.

He always gave a great account of himself even when losing, see mayweather fight. He's way better than many of the comments here, and despite the whining about factoring margaritto's cowardly casts, it did have a profound impact...even in losses, he gradually flashed more and more glimpses the undefeated fighter he was prior, even if he never would be again.

And that means lots of fans, which means lots of $$$$$$.

Because he's a Latin fighter who brings eyeballs and east coast $$$. What's complicated?

What's complicated is he always became #1 of someone's sanctioning body following a loss. On two occasions ko losses. Hard not to have a successful career when titles are being placed at your feet win, lose, or draw.
