Why has Hopkins made this unwinnable match? Why does he think he can win?

Well, OK, I was being nice to bernard by saying "sneaky"! "Dirty *******" it is, then!

Yeah, I know what you're saying. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Hopkins said he's gonna cut Joe, which of course translates to "I'm gonna headbutt Joe".

Calzaghe is very up for this fight; he thinks he has a lot to prove to the Americans and badly wants to stop Hopkins. Whenever Calzaghe is up for a fight, he fights like he did against Lacy and Kessler...not like he did against Bika. He does not underestimate Hopkins one bit as a strategist, thinker and as someone who will do whatever it takes to win. If Hopkins expects Calzaghe to take this fight for granted, he has a big surprise coming.

No need to be overcautious about this fight, I think, as a Calzaghe supporter. Hopkins is just a human being, after all.

Yes, I could be wrong but that's how it seems to me, just going on interviews, etc. He doesn't seem to get wound up much, and to be honest I don't think Hops will get under his skin.

Most sane people including myself agree Hopkins would could all kinds of trouble, especially with his right hand. 8-10 years ago.

In 2008 this fight is simply embarrassing mate.
It will be horrific if the Wright fight is anything to go by.

Would you agree, though, that calzaghe is very good at adapting to styles "on the fly"? I think he does a great job of doing this and finding the ability to nullify an opponents best weapons. Maybe it's a good idea not to stick rigidly to any one game plan, but have a few possible gameplans mapped out and be prepared to adapt and throw everything out the window if needed?

We will be in a better position to argue over this in the few days before the fight not after they've done one press conference in London.

The next few weeks are pretty easy but sean brought up the week before the fight. Quite rightly. Joe is used to being at home, seeing his family, driving his own car to the weigh in etc... In Vegas, he is well out of that zone. The constant media attention, the bright flashing lights, the lack of understanding loved ones, the expectation for putting on a big show.

Living in a hotel does funny things to you. Joe is a perfectionist and knows exactly what he wants and how he wants to do it. Things will happen that he has no control over. Then, and only then, will he realise he's in Las Vegas not Newbridge.

He is experienced and mature enough emotionally to stay on top of all that. The Kessler fight brought him a confidence he never had and proved his maturity at the same time. He will be very up for this fight because it is the fight that he will be remembered by in the USA. Not the Lacy fight; THIS fight. Expect nothing less than a Calzaghe at his very best, his age permitting.:good

Bernard and Schaefer lowering their purse split demands, making it 50/50, is the inequivocal proof that they wanted this fight more than Warren and Calzaghe did. I think Joe never really meant to travel to the States but he got enthusiastic about the whole Mayweather-Hatton thing and he genuinely believes he's gonna win a shutout decision. I think Hopkins has a much more clearheaded notion that there is not so much between the Calzaghe who beat Kessler and himself, even at this point in his career. I wouldn't rule out that Hopkins is looking to make money more than anything else because he already accomodated in the position of the unfavoured fighter and you only do that when you are looking to make the most of what your opponent may not come to do - Hopkins makes money and expects to capitalize on the small window of opportunity in the boxing match itself, that's what I make of it.

This isn't the first time Hopkins has taken a fight that people said he couldn't win. Most people assumed Tito would beat him. Almost no one gave him a chance against Tarver. Now does this mean he will beat Joe? Of course not. The point is, just because nobody gives him a chance of winning doesn't mean he shouldn't take the fight. There might be something he sees in Calzaghe that makes him believe that he can beat him; something many others are overlooking.

Calzaghe needs to make sure his head is on straight for this one, that is the only Achiles heel I see, but its quite a biggie at that.

Calm yourself. That's as much info as will fit into the thread title which was orignally different - but got posts responding to the thread title rather than the opening post which explains the thread rather more cleary.

Basically it's about these seemingly opposing facts:

1 - Calzaghe is a strong, strong favourite in my eyes.

2 - Hopkins is unlikely to find himself in a match he can't win.
