Why has Manny experienced such a sharp physical decline, post 2009/10?

Are you of the group that beleives he hasn't declined that much, but has instead been facing better opposition that aren't 'tailor made' for him so has not looked as good?

Or are you of the group that beleives he has declined considerably since the Cotto fight, and if so, why is that?

There aren't many fighters who go from looking that good, and a pretty good example of the best version of themselves to 'way out' of their prime in a couple years

Several posters on here (most notably, Popkins) have claimed that the Pacquiao from the Cotto fight would have stopped Mayweather, but current Pacquiao now loses to him

My question is what has happened to Pacquiao in 2/3 years, that he could have gone from stopping the p4p1 boxer (depending on who you ask), to losing to him, that's a greater decline than age alone, considering they both age at the same rate and Pac is the younger of the two

So my question is what's changed with Manny? What's different?

*please no vitorol, and please no Mayweather talk, strictly about Pacman

I thought Pac would drop a UD to Mayweather in 2009 and I think he would in 2012, and that both men have clearly declined and it's showed both in shutout victories and tough, competitive ones. Pac can't move the same way at all. Neither can Mayweather. Mayweather can adapt to that better with his ring IQ and versatility. And he's got a stylistic advantage over Pac regardless at that.

All I know is soon as floyd aired him out on taking PED'S, pac's has shown a steady decline in his performances. All of a sudden his monstrous power for 12 rounds, him not getting tired throwing punches has suddenly vanished.

    pocket is now full.

his hunger to be the best is gone, killer instinct (to finish off margo, shane or timmy) is gone....hell, he didn't even seem to care that much about getting robbed.

with all the wine women and song - not to mention politics and tax problems - he has definitely declined, but is still a top 2 p4p.

The performance decline is obvious and is most notably evident in two aspects: His power certainly seems diminished and his stamina/work rate/energy too has abated.

Personally, I think there was PED use that has subsequently ceased, as this directly correlates with the two most evident changes in his performance.

The only other probable explanation is a dramatic change in training and focus. He has tried to become more of a boxer, likely at the expense of strength, power and conditioning, as more attention in camp would be given to skill set and technical improvements in training.

I would subscribe to the former.

Easy to say he's off the PEDS, and maybe that's true, but-

Basically, his style was all about youth, speed, and aggression. Not so much technique and ring smarts. Thus, he's not the kind of fighter that can maintain his greatness as he ages. (as opposed, for instance, to Floyd, who is the exact opposite.)

The author of this thread asks for opinion, so I understand that you just want to share your opinion. BUT atleast try to post your opinion based from a fact. :patsch

For example, Pac may have declined because of the FACT that he is not a full time boxer anymore (he does other things during training. His focus is not 100% like what he used to be).

It is an obvious correlation he makes though. And most probably has at the very least some merit.

    This is very true.

Rafael Nadal is a perfect example to use as an analogy.

He's had a lot of fights in the past 2 - 3 years. Before those fights he got into too many wars; however, he always seemes to come out on top. As with most athletes, too much vigorous.exercise combined with age is the start of an athletes decline. Same with Mayweather, since Marquez his legs have been totally shot. Its a little fish though, because he only had 8 months from then to when he fought shane and he looked considerably slower
