My favourite kinds of boxers, but they have dropped harder than USA. - Their amateurs show no major promise. - Their top stars are Juan Francisco Estrada, Canelo Alvarez, Abner Mares and Oscar Valdez...that's it. Canelo is not and never will be truly elite. Estrada is the best Mexican fighter today without a doubt and should end up as a HOF with his abilities. Marquez is like 42 years old the other day. Mares is a very good fighter (is he slipping though?). Valdez shows promise but not like that of an ATG. Remember the previous era had Barrera, Morales and Marquez all in one division? Ricardo Lopez, Jose Luis Castillo, Rafael Marquez, Israel Vasquez etc.
Canelo is already better than Castillo, Rafael Marquez or Vasquez ever were in my opinion and he' still so young. Other than that I agree there has been a slight decline but that's no huge shame considering the previous era being so hot.
hahahaha did you just meation israel vasquez, and rafael marquez as examples of how strong the previous era was for mexican boxers? no wonder you're 2014's ****tiest poster of the year. israel's little brother sugar vasquez will be just as good or better. if you're going to put names like that on your past era list, might as well put zurdo, santa cruz, francisco vargas, salido, miguel vasquez on this era's list.
Mexicans never needed a strong amateur circuit. The mexicans turned pro at a young age and got experience by having a lot of lower-level fights.
60s Vicente Saldivar, Ruben Olivares 70s Miguel Canto, Carlos Zarate 80s Salvador Sanchez, Julio Cesar Chavez 90s Julio Cesar Chavez, Ricardo Lopez 00s Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez, Rafael Marquez 10s Juan Francisco Estrada, Saul Alvarez
I don't know if it has declined but there used to be a lot more Mexican boxers I was a big fan of before than there are these days. I loved Chavez Snr, Barrera, Morales, Jose Luis Lopez, and JMM among others. These days the only ones I can think of I like off the top of my head are Humberto Soto and Mikey Garcia and the later is obviously Mexican-American.
I don't think it's fair to say Canelo will never be elite. It all depends on how shopworn he'll be by his late 20's. To his credit, he's taken on some terrific competition for the last couple years with vastly different styles. He's a seasoned veteran at this point, and he's only 25 I believe? I favor him to beat Cotto which would give him another title in another weight division. Out of all the young fighters out there, Canelo has one of the more promising futures in the sport and is possibly on his way to a HOF type of career.
They started getting some super comfortable stools to quit on. Yeah Junior, we're all looking at you!
