Why has Mike Tyson become so underrated?

I think Tyson would definately have set the record straight had buster given him a rematch like a man. He is not really bitter about his defeat to douglas like lenni was about his defeat to mccall and rahman

He finished the Douglas and Holyfield fights on his feet.

He was down in round 6 vs Holyfield and got up and carried on fighting.

Lewis never got up to finish a fight he lost.

And he gets too much credit for his rematches, he didn't exactly destroy Mccall, lol he was scared to even engage him even though Mccall was an emotional wreck and sitting duck. And remind me why on earth should he get credit for doing to Rahman in the rematch when it is what he should have done in the first place?

It is not like he rematched a Joe Frazier, Mohd Ali, George Foreman or Larry Holmes. He gets too much undeserved credit.

I don't bother too much about Tyson rematching Douglas, Williams, McBride. It is a known fact that he would completely pulverize them when fully fit and focused, it is a credit to his sportsmanship and big heart that unlike Lenni, he never took his defeats personally and to this day never bad mouths any of his opponents who beat him be it Douglas, Lewis, Williams, McBride.

On the other hand to watch Lewis continously be little Rahman again and again to this day in interviews just tells me that the guy is just a sore and bad looser who refuses to accept responsibility for the defeat and to give his opponent credit for anything. And i have watch the press conferences he had with Rahman after the first fight and it was Lewis who started mocking, instigating Rahman "That was a lucky punch, Hashim, wouldn't you say?". And then the fact he has to continue to sell to the public to this day what he did to an absolute shell of Tyson in 2002 speaks volumes of his desperation to win the kind of love, adulation and fan following that Tyson has with the boxing fans, fraternity which he could never achieve in a million years.

To me rankings mean jack, it is about the memory you leave and how you are remembered.

    True.
Lewis's conceit and arrogance was particularly unattractive.
I mean, they are all egotistic and ultra-competitive personalities but he was particularly unlikeable. And for the reason you highlight ... he never once gave any credit to the men who defeated him, he lacked that normal sportsmanship. He seemed particularly spiteful with it.
Also, I didn't like how he portrayed himself as a victim and an outsider battling the boxing establishment for much of his career, when in fact he was a very shrewd manipulator. Or perhaps I don't like the fact that people actually believe that, contrary to all the facts and evidence.

Tyson, for all his faults, was a more likeable character certainly.
But Lennox Lewis was a very good fighter. And that's the bottom line.

Let me explain the golden rule of holes to you.

When you are in one FFS stop digging. I couldn't care less about your opinion, just look at Tyson's physique, and his weights in all 4 of the fights I mention and you will see there is little or no difference.

If on the other hand you are whining like a schoolgirl because he took Douglas as lightly as he took Spinks, Bruno and Williams and paid the price for it. Well I'm afraid that is something you and the other fanboys are just going to have to live with.

Just don't insult every other posters intelligence with your lying garbage about Tyson being under prepared, or having a bad training camp. He thought he was invincible, and found out he was a little boy in a big mans world. Simple as that.

Funnily enough there are people who believe if Lewis had been fully focused in Rahman 1 instead of hanging around in Las Vegas with muppets like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Julia Roberts filming some garbage about robbing a casino, he would have pulverised Hasim too. :good

Once again I will ask you for some actual meaningful insight??? The fact you believe physiques equal conditioning tells me enough I need to know about your level of knowledge when it comes to Combat sports. Would I be wrong in saying you have never fought in your life? Because you honestly don't know **** about the fight game yet you hold such strong opinions about fighters you couldn't lace the boots of. Fact is you're just another one of those boxrec fans who go off of numbers and names on a piece of paper, reply to me when you gain knowledge of FIGHTING not BOXREC.

I have no doubt. That rematch was an actual reflection of what should have happened in the first match.

hes wrong though it wasn't merely a poor example, it was appallingly abysmal. What makes it worse is you questioning why its so poor. He was being kind to you, you should have quit with just "poor"

He clearly never fought before and If/when a time does come where he plucks up the coarage to actually go to a boxing club and get in the ring, instead of watching fights on YouTube and posting nonsense/disrespect online about the sport he might begin to see for himself what it's really about.
Until then he will continue to fill his posts with asinine garbage.

Tyson was the same fighter in 1988 as he was in 1989 and 1990, he just wasn't fighting the same.cit has nothing to do with weight. Tyson's conditioning and especially his form was definitely affected by the removal of Kevin Rooney as his trainer.
There was speculation of this at the time and rhe writing was on the wall as can be seen clear as day in the Bruno fight. It's a fact that he never looked so bad; he got rocked badly in the first round, he got hit with more punches in that fight than his previous 5 fights, he looked terrible except for the knock out, had Rooney been in his corner he'd have made that fight a lot easier than it was.
He didn't correct the mistakes from the Bruno fight, he continued to keep hired clowns in his corner and he paid the price for it in his worst performance to date against Douglas, his energy levels were the lowest I've seen from him in that fight. He looked dead from the start, stood directly in front of Douglas. He was caught with punches that simply would not be landing with anything close to the same frequency had he been In better condition and had been practicing the defensive drills that made him such a difficult fighter to land punches on. There's no way Tyson would have been stopped by Douglas had he been in the same shape he was in for the Tubbs fight in Japan two years earlier.
In this condition Tyson would have a lot more energy, upper body movement to avoid Douglas jab/right cross punch resistance in general, punch placement and timing, fluidity , and motivation to throw combinations and to counter and come back with a lot more of his own combination punches, Conditioning is essential in boxing and this fight did more to prove that old saying In boxing, "a second rater in shape will always beat a first rater out of shape" than any other I can think of.

Tyson was so far ahead of the curve when he lost to Douglas, that he could afford to fall off a cliff.

He was not playing to be compared to the Dempsey’s Liston’s of history any more, that was already a done deal.

The outstanding question was whether he could ultimately be compared to Marciano, or even Louis.

He might have fallen short of what was expected of him, but that still leaves a hell of a lot.

Where do you have him? Do you think he has a good argument for top 5?

H2H he's up there on the podium somewhere, top 3 easily.
