I really can't pinpoint it but I've been watching boxing since I was a kid and I have never seen the heavyweight seen so blah! I mean is it me or am I missing something? I remember when I was 16 and parents ponying up 25.00 on (Closed Circuit TV?) in a CYO to watch Tyson vs. Spinks. It was electric until Spinks decided he wasn't coming out till alot later. But the energy was palpable. Now when anybody mentions a heavyweight fight it enduces me to YAWWWWN. Why has the heavyweight Division lost it?

Why has the Heavyweight division lost it's umph? Because modern heavyweights are fat bloated pallokas with ZERO boxing skills.

They should bring back 15 round fights - 250lb heavyweights would again become a rarity...

Lack of depth, lack of character and lack of overall skills.

Because many of the top heavyweights are exactly that.. heavy weight guys. Chris Chambers, Chris Arreola, Samuel Peters look more like pro bowlers than boxers.

Not to mention no one in the top 10, except David Haye has any sort of Charisma or marketability. The top guys are all overgrown , eastern European robots who only win because they face off against out of shape fighters.

I don't think it's so much a question of talent...well okay, perhaps the American heavyweights in particular have really been hit hard in that department.

But mostly, it's the lack of character. There are lots of pretty average looking, average built guys out there with pretty similar skills. Jack of all trades but master of none.

One of the reasons the 90s heavyweight scene was so popular was that, whether it was good or bad things (and plenty of both happened) it was fun and unpredictable and controversial because of that. And there was a real varied mix of fighters and characters.

Holy warrior Holyfield, laid-back dreadlocked Lewis, mad dog Tyson, talented but weight-battling Bowe, punchin' preacher Foreman, big-talking pineapple head Briggs, Brit favourite Bruno, powerful but vulnerable redneck Morrison, tough surly Mercer, totally unpredictable Golota, dynamite New Zealander Tua, huge but raw Grant, the Moorer & Atlas soap opera, frankly bonkers Ibeabuchi, slickster Byrd, big-hooking Ruddock...

You get the jist. Characters are what tend to draw people and there just aren't really enough around at the moment.

it happens, divisions go thru weak periods

and its the heavyweights turn now.....

although there is some talent there, just most of it is 25lbs heavier than they should be!maybe thats just the society we live in; overweight people

Not enough good fighters there to compete.

Right and not only that but you were guaranteed some semblance of an exciting fight with all those guys. Bowe vs Golota, Tue vs Ibeatahoochie, Holyfield vs Bowe, Tyson vs Razor, Bruno vs Tyson, Morrison vs Mercer etc etc. There was high tension and drama mostly due to the post above me, the characters involved. Hell not even just the CHARACTERS but the atmosphere of a HW fight couldn't be topped.

Nowadays you have a declining American HW scene and a punch of solid all around but nothing spectacular european HWs who don't exactly excite the crowds in the ring or out of it.

    Right. Ali was a character.

You think all characters are good guys? Or do you just not think at all?

  13. It missing the depth The Klit brother are good boxers but there is no second level like

Byrd, Bruno, Mcall, Golota, Grant, Tua, Briggs etc... who would all be belt holders in todays divs

Maybe because the last time we saw two heavies really banging hard in the ring was Bowe-Golota. Today we have a 45 year old Holyfield getting robbed against a 7 foot freak.

True, but the magic word is "American" fighters.
