It's been behind 168, 118, and 140 over the past two years.

    Answer:
    1. marketing / promoters
    2. the big two fight there, have for a little while, connects with 1.
    3. a weight which all nationalities can carry well
    4. historical glory division
    5. purely entertainment speaking, part way between the extremes of what heavies and strawweights bring to the table

Because 140 was so great. Hatton, Cotto, Mayweather, Pacquaio

The fighters and the fact it's the most well balanced division, it's not too big, it's not too small, and it has a very good mixture of speed and power, such as mosley and pacquiao. It's personally my favorite division.

Simple economics. The biggest money fights are around welterweight right now, so guys want to fight in that division. Plus, it is a fan-friendly division as the fights typically offer a high rate of activity and fairly high KO percentage, so fans will watch/buy the fights therefore putting more money in the division.

Great post. Have you ever considered this: Those guys are extremely athletic, but not quite big enough to play any other sport other than perhaps baseball. Is boxing the best option for a smaller framed male athlete?
