To be honest there is no harm in staying amateur. He gets a very decent wage not just one that pay's the bills. The best sport financially to be an amateur in Ireland is boxing. Ever since the HPU was introduced.
Egan's on the top amateur grant here of E40,000 and has also signed up to compete in the World Series of Boxing for Miami. That will also bring in E22-28000 over the five month season. Then he does sponsorships and endorsements. Plus he's onto a good thing, as it's assumed he'll take on a role within the High Performance Unit here once he retires.
Good Luck to him...:good Whilst he remains amateur he keeps control of things the way he wants to do things...:good If he was to turn Pro, it's a different ball game...:yep Amateur Boxing is a Sport, Professional Boxing is a Brutal Business...:deal
Cammarelle and Egan are both well looked after as star amateurs. I don't think the adjustment to pro would be an easy one for Kenny. He has a style best suited to the amateur scoring system. He can make a good living and be a great ambassador for Boxing in his current role. There's no real need for him to take the risky gamble of a pro career.
I dont think egan had the pro style and I think he knew that himself , I think I heard him say in an interview that he was suited to the ams , he is on 80,000 a year off the Irish sports council plus sponsorship deals id say he is raking it in , although I dont think he will make the next olympics as young teenage sensation Joe Ward is moving up to his division and has the potential to be one of Irelands greatest ever boxers !
I think two of the posts above hit the nail on the head. Egan is as far from a pro fighter style wise as you can get. He is a very accurate puncher but does not pack much power in his shots. He fights off the back foot and I would describe him as a scientific boxer. His style makes him very effective when it comes to the scoring in amature boxing's as his work is very clean and it is easy to see when he lands. I don't think the strength and aggression of pro fighting would suit him. When you look at Rendall Munroe getting £80,000 for a world title shot the money and fame of the pro ranks isn't all it is cracked up to be sometimes.
very true i have family in sicily and am boxing is a big deal there - him and domenico valentino are proper famous am boxing is on RAI 1 or 2 and they have proper build up ads to the fights even my cousins mate who knows mike tyson and ali had heard of cammaralle
