your nae says it all. but you are badly wrong. Byron Mitchell should have been a 2 weight champion, he beat ottke. Robin Reid had just lost his belt. Lacy was an overwhelming favourite, tipped to knock out calzaghe instead he got a masterclass. Kessler was a very good champion who clearly lost to calzaghe. B-hop is arguably still in his prime, rjj well everyone knows the score there. But you forget, calzaghe called out hopkins throughout the late 90's, he also expressed his desire to fight rjj. it was hopkins who decided to call out joe after beating a light middleweight three weights above his natural weight.

hatton an calzaghe are leagues apart in terms of class. hatton was very one dimensionable, he avoided cotto and whitter who were the two best light welters of his era. props for fighting mayweather and pacman but your post is ridiculous. calzaghe had over twice the title fights that hatton had, and he was ring champion at two divisions. ye calzaghe didnt fight ottke, but rjj never fought michalowski and that wont tarnish his rep will it. calzaghe held every belt in his main division.

    this thread = bull**** :deal

You are wrong about Calzaghe calling out Jones in my opinion, as I have seen a quote from Calzaghe from the Daily Mirror in '99 saying he did not want to take the risk of fighting Roy Jones. Calzaghe may have name-dropped him in interviews for appearances sake, but that's not "calling out" as I see it.

I'm not much interested in arguing over whether he did or didn't chase those fights though, as I suspect you aren't much either.

The fact is that Ricky Hatton wanted fights with Floyd & Pacman, he openly said so, he made concrete offers to both camps, he thrashed out deals, and he fought them in their primes.

Joe didn't manage to do so with either Hopkins or Jones. End of story, and the moral of the story is whatever you want it to be.

In terms of ability only, I struggle to think of areas that Hatton is stronger than Calzaghe in. Bodypunching yes. Can't think of any others really.

no coincidence when Hatton left Warren he got the MEGA fights...

Do you think Warren would honestly let Hatton go to the US to face PACMAN and FLOYD????????!!!!

The thing his Calzaghe his a crafty and clever he was making the easy payday....hes a fraudulant ****.....no way he would have gone to the states and taken a gamble when it mattered...but i still think he is slightly better than Hatton

your notion that calzaghe didn't lose, so he didn't gamble, is laughable. calzaghe is the rarest and best of gamblers. a winner.
knocking off undefeateds lacey and kessler to go with some lesser knowns. and taking on both rjj and bhop who despite you all saying were past their prime, they are the same two guys who haven't yet retired.
don't act as if you won't tune in to see their upcoming battle. don't act like you don't think bhop can give any current lightheavy a fight.
can't concede footwork to hatton. the only catagory rickey beats joe in is relative power. don't forget it was footwork walked rickey into a hook followed by a ringpost against floyd. and footwork walked him into a super pac left.
for joe to produce his punch outputs, he always had to be in position to throw. that's footwork. joe's abilities appeared as a symbiosis of offense and defense.
    rickey was over aggressive.

    No no no!

I can't think of any boxer with better footwork than Calzaghe!

    Power yes.

Overall Calzaghe is by far the better boxer. Hatton did get two megafights, but was clearly beaten in both. Calzaghes resume will look a lot better after Kessler wins the super-six.

Do you seriously think you can put a new spin on something that gets rehashed all the time in these forums?

Do you seriously think, with a name like 'Hitman-Fan', that your post would be a non-partial one?

    Dumbass.

I've seen that quote before, but no-one has ever been able to authenticate it. It may or may not be made up. If it's not made up, then the timing makes it irrelevant. 1999 was too early for Calzaghe to take on Jones, I don't think that would be a particularly contraversial opinion.

I rate Calzaghe highly, much higher than Hatton, for example, but of all the past greats to come from Britain, Ken Buchanan takes the honor of being the greatest of all, skillwise and everything else.

    INCORRECT!!!!!

You don't dominate a whole division as champion for 7 years by being a scrapper you also have to be a master/boxer + you dont beat/dominate the likes of Carlos Palomino & Sugar Ray Leonard by being just a scrapper as you'd be KTFO:smoke

    Mayweather/Hatton = KTFO:p
    Pacquiao/Hatton.... = KTFO:p

the problem with people who think joe fought bums, is that they are stupid. they where all tipped to be great fighters up until joe battered them.

eubank, well that was his title shot
    reid, everyone wanted that fight
starie, reigning british champion who'd beaten clinton woods
    sheika, huge prospect
woodhall, again ex champion, everyone wanted it
mario veit, tipped to give joe huge problems
brewer, ex champ who gott robbed against ottke
salem, tough fight for anyone to take(kinda the clottey of SM)
Lacy, seen as the next tyson
Bika, agian tipped to give joe huge problems
Kessler, two belt champion in his prime
b-hop, the best LH by far
Jones, everyone wanted to see it

people look at that list and might not recognise the names now, but at the time of the fight they where quality championship level opponents. obviously he fought a few mandatories but he was champion for 10 years, mandatories are part of being a champion
