It is apparent that Hearns was a unique situation where he learned how to use his height and reach to advantage and he had unique speed and leverage and everything else. He put it all together. H He was not a power guy at amateur, so he changed and learned the whole game and became one of the hardest punchers ever, and even later adding more body punching.. When fighters are great they took their physical attributes and created a style which worked perfectly for their measurements. A Hearns who fought on the inside takes away the room he needs to punch. Duran or Hagler or Leonard all used what they had to great advantage. Even Tyson used that shorter stature to bob and weave to get inside then work the body and come up. Great fighters use what they have to great advantage. Even Hagler with his southpaw style and 75 inch reach, which his reach is always forgotten. But they don't come around everyday. Like there have not been another Hearns, there were not other Tysons either. Tua was thought to be like that, but he didn't have the speed or combinations of Tyson.
Foster was similar. Breland was a poor imitation of Hearns. Tall fighters come up and short ones also. Many people think because a fighter is tall he can move up and fight at any weight, which is not true. Look at Foster or Breland.. Hearns could do it, but it is always a struggle. For tall and short since weight is not always about height. Tyson had a great style for a shorter guy with tall guys. He perfected it. Roldan was limited, but he had the only style which would work for him at that weight. There are just as many limitations for tall fighters as for short..
Terrence Crawford reminds a little of Hearns (meanness and precision, kind of lanky too). Obviously Hearns was far superior.
I dunno about a Tommy Hearns, but if you look at my avatar, you can see a potential ww Marvelous One.
Caution couldn’t save him in the 1st Leonard fight. In fact, he outboxed SRL until he got caught with a fight changing body shot in round 6. From that point on, SRL transformed from prey to predator.
I don't know when we will see another Tommy Hearns but I never get tired of watching Hagler/Hearns round 1. This content is protected
