I am a newbie to the site and a newbie to seriously following the sport.

I think boxing can be quite cartoonish is the sell of the big fights as well. But that is the world in which we live.

Recently here in Ireland we had a show called celebrity boxing. It wasn't the best but what the overriding thing that came through was that anyone who steps into the ring deserves all the respect in the world for putting themselves on the line for it. Every last one of them shared your sentiments by the end of the show.

 

The drama, the pure theater that is involved in a big fight. The rich history, the sub-plots and the rivalries. And, finally, the numerous rags to riches stories. The most recent example being Manny Pacquiao, who was selling donuts as a teenager and is now one of the world's most recognisable sportsmen and a member of congress.

Well said Dan, esp. the bit about the journeymen, who i believe are the real BLOOD of the sport

 

The build up to a big boxing event can not be bettered by any other sport.

 

Of course they are. That's what gets me so wound up about people calling fighters 'bums' or even worse 'tomato cans', whatever a ****ing tomato can is.

Fact is 95% of all boxers could fall into the journeyman, bum or tomato can category. They're what keeps the sport going.
