Hagler destroyed the two previous lineal champions plus three nr 1 contenders and several top 5 contenders on top of that. No controversial decisions (no, the Duran fight wasn't close) - he left the ring with no argument who the better fighter had been, actually with the other guy not hearing the final bell in almost all cases. He ruled the divisions for seven years as undisputed champion, leaving no question marks.

Hopkins, like Golovkin, also had to wait a long time to get in the ring with the top MWs of his day, but when he did he dominated them. However you scored Golovkin-Canelo, it was nothing like the utter schooling and beat down Hopkins put on Trinidad. Neither was Canelo-Jacobs anywhere like the brutal beating a 38-year old Hopkins gave Joppy. He dominated Holmes and Eastman and KO'd De la Hoya, while nearing 40.

Hopkins separated himself from the top MWs in the late 90's and early 00's with same dominant brutality Hagler did with the best of the late 70's and early-mid 80's.

Golovkin never got to face Martinez sadly, and when he finally got a shot at the lineal champion he didn't put in a dominant performance. Whatever you think of the decision, I can't see it as anything but a very close fight. Neither did he separate himself against the one top ranked contender (next to himself) he faced.

Hopkins and Hagler were more dominant in general against their top opposition. Golovkin so far hasn't been.

yeh another way to put it is haggler had finished an atg undisputed mw career at the age that ggg had yet to win a title.

Martinez have the better wins over the last 10 years. There wasn't any arguing whether he won or not against Pavlik and Williams.

If Golovkin clearly beats Canelo then Jacobs and Saunders, things will look substantially different. But that's still a big "if".

A good question. The best middle Hopkins fought at 160 were Jones and Taylor, but he lost those fights.

Keith Holmes was a natural middle, but would nor rate among GGG's three best opponents.

Hopkins also drew to an 18-2 Mercado, who ended up 19-10-2! Hopkins was down twice in separate rounds in this fight, he's lucky to get a draw. Clearly others bear Mercado easier, GGG would have butchered Mercado as he was stopped 9 times in his career.

    He was prime.

35 years old , a relative easy career against cheese puffs , no wars , no injuries. He was fine.
The only logical reasoning for him being past prime is Canelo making him look past prime.

Prime is determined by how many miles you have on the clock , not by age. Tony Bellew is 35 and he's never been better.

Setting the rules like that is a touch unfair, wouldn't you say? You want to rule out Oscar de la Hoya and Felix Trinidad being mentioned in favor of Hopkins, when Golovkin's legacy hangs on a victory over Alvarez, should he win? LOL

That aside, Hopkins beat far better competition overall, during his middleweight run, and made it look easy. To place this into some context, I think Hopkins would have toyed with Jacobs.

he destroyed Mercado. why do you like make shyt up, do you deliberately try to wreck your credibility?

what on earth is this attempt at a dig at Holmes. You pick one guy, the weakest you can find on Hopkins resume, who you claim wouldn't make GGG's top three....an you are still wrong there, Holmes was a top contender just like Jacobs the only difference being holmes had won a title before.

You couldn't make worst posts if you tried.

Kelly Pavlik was the best MW 10 years ago. 8 years ago is was Sergio Martinez.

Agreed, but it didn't bother Hopkins too much, as he was beating Trinidad to a 12-round stoppage.

true but Hopkins had way broader skillset to fall back on that 3G who is all about the bass.

Hopkins was unlucky he didn't get the nod against Mercado. He more than put the record straight, next fight, contested on home soil. His resume is overall far better than Golovkin's.

Please tell me who you think Golovkin's three best opponents are?
