Why in Fantasy match ups, ATG's always wins?

It's because people only appreciate what they had once it's gone.

I'm pretty certain that those 'ATG's' went through the same scrutiny that todays legends do, by that Generations bunch of narrow minded old timers with their rose tinted glasses.

I respect the past, but I don't place it on a throne over the present.

 

You're comparing the best fighters of this time to the best fighters of all time. Both Pacquiao & Floyd would beat plenty of ATG's, and they'd lose to plenty of ATG's. Some people enter these kinds of discussions with biased views, either for the older generation or the newer one, without having actually seen much of both fighters involved. They're rather easy to spot though, and you just have to take it on an individual basis and not make this a broad, "past fighters vs current fighters" debate, which happens over and over again. Floyd Mayweather would likely beat Alexis Arguello, one of the greatest fighters of all time. He'd likely lose to Roberto Duran, one of the greatest fighters of all time. Duran isn't favored because he's a past ATG, he's favored because he's Duran and most people who have seen extensive footage of both he and Floyd feel he'd emerge as the victor there. Of course older fighters are going to win more fantasy match ups, you're comparing the best of 7 or 8 combined decades to the best of a single decade. What are the chances that the two best fighters today also happen to be the two best fighters in the entire history of the sport?

Point is, just try to take each match one-by-one and stop looking at it simply as, "old fighter vs active fighter." Those are broad generalizations that can't really tell you anything about either individual involved.

 

Because fantasy match-ups mostly appeal to golden age nostalgists who like to keep their heads up their asses.

That's a pretty generalizing statement OP.

I'd favour Whitaker, Mayweather, Delahoya, and Duran over a lot of guys at 130-135. And I'd favour Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns over a lot of guys at 147.

 

Sometimes because it's bias/nostalgia whatever you want to call it and sometimes it's just because the ATG is an ATG for a reason and people are being too quick to compare the more modern fighter in question to those ATGs.

 

For one when you talk Mayweather and Pacquiao what separates ATGs like Duran, Leonard, Hagler, Benitez and Hearns is the fact that they actually fought each other, so they are more tested than Floyd and Pacquiao so its only realistic to lean at least slightly towards more tested and proven fighters!!!

Pacquiao is a horrible head to head fighter. His best weights were arguably 126 and 130.

Match him up with the greats in those weights and it'd be ugly. Old ass Morales put it on'em and Sanchez roughed him up.

140 and 147? Could Pac actually hang with Oscar, Mayweather, Leonard, Hearns, Chavez, Armstrong, etc?

Pac's best weight would be 135-140.

 

Look at the Ali Marciano computer simulater superfight. Marciano the former champion, the atg the legend, was deemed to win over Ali the current "champion". But if you look at it now nobody would give Rocky a chance of winning against 60s or 70s ali. Its the same as today people hate the fighter we had because they are not the fighter they once had to admire

 

135 is too deep in my opinion, and we can't really guage him based on fighting David Diaz.

140lbs I agree with, because the division is not as deep as others due to its age.

I'd have his best at 130lbs.
