Why is Ali showered with the term " The Greatest"

That is basicaly the correct answer.

Ali himself used the word as a marketing gimick and did not expect it to become his nickname.

The fact that he turned out to be the greatest heavyweight of all time (consensus) helped the name to stick.

 

If you want to correct me on that one technicality, then I'll accept it. But, I stand by the general gist of my post.

 

What fight´s did Don King pay of the judges?

Right, while ranking him #4 in terms of heavyweights. Ali might not be the greatest man to ever box (Less likely than not) but he's definitely a lock for #1-2 and in my eyes. George almost finds something to hold against him in justification. He says something like "Ali relied on his skills, speed, and reflexes and post-Ali exposed he never developed a great defense." Foreman said something to that effect.

The second Holmes-Shavers fight was pretty much life and death in my view, Holmes nearly got decapitated by Shavers' right and somehow managed to survive. He was also down in another round but it was not called a knockdown by the referee.

Ray Mercer should not be considered a "special" win to anybody in my view especially when denigrating two wins over Sonny Liston but I agree that considering Holmes' age, the win over Ray Mercer was pretty special for him.

 

No, you'll notice I also said "it has something to do with him proclaiming himself as such". I didn't want to go into it in acute detail because the reason I call him The Greatest is because he proved it in the ring.

Put him down as the GREATEST MAN to ever box, and a hero bigger than boxing. Once Ali lost his speed, it only showed that he'd never developed a great defense.

 

A rather innacurate statement about a man who battled in some of the most memorable wars in ring history. Frauds do not do these things.

Weather or not these fights were robberies, is subject to opinion, and in either case, came when he was past his best. His best work came against Liston, Frazier, Foreman, Patterson, and Quarry. These are the wins that count..

Do you have proof of this?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but hopfully its based on something tangible.

Was stopping Foreman and Liston a job performed by a " jab and run fraud? "

boxing was a major sport long before Ali's political propaganda.

I respect all poster's opinions, but weather or not I view them as being validated, is another matter entirely. There needs to be a bit more here than accusations of fixed fights and running from opponents.

Yeah, I don't see how you can justify #4. He didn't seem to need that defense against you George. I like Foreman, but for whatever it's worth I think it's his way to try and discredit him.

The reason Ali is called that is because H2H, resume or transcending the sport socially a good arguement can be made that he was in fact the Greatest
