Why is being undisputed suddenly a common thing?

Since 2021 Josh Taylor, Canelo Alvarez, Jermell Charlo and Devin Hayne have all become undisputed so In the last year we’ve had more undisputed 4 belt champs than since the 4 belt era began. So what gives? Why are fighters suddenly making the effort to become undisputed whilst guys like Mayweather, Pac-Man and Roy Jones Jr never did?

They'd rather move up in weight and challenge themselves. Everyone already knew Pac, Floyd and Roy were the best in the division, no need to become undisputed

It started gaining more prestige among certain circles when the Loma vs Crawford who is the P4P king debate emerged. Like how beating Olympic gold medalists in the pros did for a short while ala when Crawford fought Gamboa and Felix Diaz which was a really dumb argument because Loma is a two time/two weight Olympic gold medalist and he's beat tons of gold, silver and bronze Olympic and WAC gold medalists. Both arguments were cited in defence of Crawford being P4P#1 by people who hated the fact Loma was ranked #1. Now they're real big on undisputed and don't shut up about it

Exactly, better enjoy it because all of these belts are about to get split up again. As soon as either Spence or Crawford wins their's, that's gonna get split too.

He who has the belts has the leverage.
It’s the knew way, how it should be moving forward.

I'm not complaining either. It's great.

I think champs got used to fighting once or twice a year, collecting decent checks and pissing around letting big fights "marinate" (I've always hated that idea) ... and after boxing all but shut down for the better part of a year and everyone sat around and they didn't get paid I think they kind of want big fights for better money.

Whatever lit a fire under them, I'm all for it. I can't recall when there have been so many unifications in one year ... and more are coming up.

It's awesome. I'd rather watch the occasional boring unification between champs for all the belts than a pointless defense like Charlo-Sulecki.

In the past, only divisions that were worth unifying got unified. Roy Jones, Bernard Hopkins & Kostya Tszyu unified divisions with the three major belts within a short space of each other. What's perhaps a little unusual now is that divisions that aren't so attractive, like Super Middle & Light Welter currently, are getting unified. It all comes down to money. If the money is there to unify & the fighters themselves aspire to be universally recognised as the best in the division & promotional / television arrangements allow it, the ingredients are there to go Undisputed.

The only title that matters in boxing is being the lineal heavyweight champion, the baddest man on the planet. The big daddy.

Everything else is smoke and mirrors.

Probably the best development in boxing in the last couple of years.
