He's given a free pass because he talks utter shite and is from the "hood".

Again, Dawson doesn't sell out relatively small-time venues in America. He's not particularly known outside of message-boards and dedicated fans.

People that look at fights purely in hindsight bother me - you need to give fighters credit for taking fights that appear to be risks at the time, not just retroactively make judgements about them after the fact (yes, in that sense, I give credit to Calzaghe for both the Lacy and Kessler fights, though most reasonable observers would put him at least 50/50 going into both).

Tarver (Bhop's weight jump), Trinidad and Pavlik were all significant risks. Defining them differently is just Monday morning quarterbacking. I know it's done a ton around here, but it doesn't make it right.

And, as I said, I do think Hop receives slack because of this. For that matter, I think Pac does, too. He's made his recent fights look easy, but people recognize that he was taking on challenges going in. That's how fighters gain respect (and hence, get cut some slack). Hop gets it a bit too much, but I can see why.

    FAIL indeed.

My question to you FrochPascal, why does Calzaghe get a free-pass, in regards to fighting Dawson, but not Hopkins?

Afterall, Calzaghe retired with something left in the tank and a legacy still to be proved to an extent, whereas Hopkins is trying to pursue CW's & HW's.

Good post. Kessler did not have any names on his resume but was still a risk at the time they fought. I always tought Lacy was crap. The only reason people gave him 50/50 was Cal's lack of opposition at the time. We didn't really know how good he was. Having said that, he did beat the best version of lacy, at the time he could still punch pretty hard.

I agree with some of your criticisms of hopkins record, but is making Calzaghe "move up in weight" really a good point. Calzaghe easily carried the weight and should likely have been more comfortable at 175 (or was it a catchweight 170, forget) as he was in his mid 30's and not a small smw.

That's simply it, without question. It's one of those situations where I have no issue with a fighter avoiding another fighter.

Calzaghe and Hopkins were at similar levels.... who achieved more? i would say Hopkins, who also risked more.

small man argument against Hopkins is BS.... otherwise even guys like Hagler shouldn't be considered great middlewieght.... he fought Hearns who started at Welterweight and Duran and Leonard who were also fighting at lighter weights........I agree Hopkins did have defenses against c-level option too...but Calzaghe and RJJ have more than their fair share of bums on their resume...

Hopkins dominated a weak MW division but his legacy goes beyond that and his acheivments at higher weights are also something to consider....
