Why is boxing not a popular sport to watch?

It`s the Americans who think it`s not a popular sport anymore because they don`t see many of their lot that come through anymore.It`s popular in Europe and in Russia and it`s been popular as ever in Britain over the last 20 years.

 

The average person dosnt want to spend money on a ppv

If the fight is really that good they can watch hilights on YouTube

 

It's violent, the training for it is generally primitive and as a result they are generally inferior athletes. They aren't elite strength athletes or elite endurance athletes so when you watch a boxing match its generally just two tough guys fighting, you aren't seeing any aspect of fitness pushed to human limits and most people can't relate. When you see a football player you can imagine its an extension of you lifting weights in the gym, when you watch the Tour de France you can picture that its you when you're on your bike. Everybody can pick up a soccer ball and kick it around, everybody can pick up a basketball. You can't just go and box, it's a cultural thing. In some Eastern European places boxing is like every other sport but not in the western world, it's seen as a thugs sport and most people don't want anything to do with punching someone else in the head.

 

When you really get down to it boxing hasnt changed that much

there have always been bad decisions, ring deaths, traumatic injuries, big fights that were boring or a let down, champions were not always American, and there wasnt always one champion at every weight

boxing has always been a corrupt sport with nitpicking fans but it was once popular

basically boxing being flawed isnt the issue. Its media coverage and possibly PPV. Most people just dont know when or what channel the fights are.

If people who love football and other popular sports saw Rios vs Alvarado and Bradley fight they would love it, maybe they wouldnt get everything and be mad at the stoppage of Alvarado and maybe get mad that Provo didnt win because he did more damage but they would walk away liking what they saw

Boxing has to get back on day time TV and regular free network TV, not cable like FX or NBC Sports but like NBC and ABC and CBS the big networks and all of their affiliates

UFC is probably getting a big push being featured on FOX FX and all of its major affiliates

I think the average moron can deal with 4 champs and 17 weights because they dont know much about the sport anyway. They dont watch not because of that, they dont watch just because it isnt available

look at a huge network like ESPN, thats where people get all of their sports knowledge. Sure there are other networks but nobody watches them. ESPN to my knowledge had zero coverage of the Bradley fight on Sportscenter or First Take

The network focuses on the Pac-Floyd drama and makes boxing look more like a 3 ring circus than a sport.

 

Not popular?

50.000 people watch the klitschkos LIVE and they aren't exactly pure entertainment.

The top two guys who earn the MOST money in _ALL_ of sports is boxers, hell even Wladimir is in the top 100.

Boxing is popular.

 

Think of it this way. There are what, 300 million people in the US? So if the big PPV's get roughly a million buys, with roughly 3-4 persons watching per buy, that's 4 million people, so roughly a little over 1 percent watch the biggest events. 1 in every 100 person.

 

not enough exposure by media. Golf is probably more popular in the US. they got their own ****ing channel. Tennis is more popular. It doesn't help that ALL the fights between the BEST fighters are on premium channels. NBC Sports is doing a good job on basic cable and hopefully Goldenboy will put some of the best fights on free CBS.

and there's too many 'champions.' some of these 'champions' wouldn't be top 5 contenders in other eras. at least when there's ONE champion, you know he must be REALLY GOOD. so the casual guy would want to check out his next fight.

 

its not popular because boxing is full of bull****

even people here think carl froch, mikkel kessler, danny green, nathan cleverley, daniel geale...blah, blah - have been world champions..

anyone who defends ANY of these fighters is part of the reason why boxing isn't mainstream

 

boxing is the "pitbull" of sports....plain and simple

Can we agree that UFC is more popular than boxing right now?

Seems like everyone was talking about GSP-Diaz on Saturday and Bradley-Provo weren't mentioned anywhere?

Sure Pacquaio and Mayweather PPVs beat out UFC but that seems to be it.

 

bradley is a flavor of the month, nothing more.
GSP is like mayweather - he's smart and breaks his opponents down..and they are both here to stay
