Why is Breazale being given a mandatory shot at the WBC title ahead of Whyte?

Whyte ducked Ortiz in a fight for a mandatory slot. Don't get it twisted, limeys.

If I recall, Whyte said he was happy to fight for mandatory status but as the Silver belt holder and number one he didn't think he should have to fight for 'second mandatory' status, especially against a guy who had just lost a title shot and had done nothing to earn another one.

The reason it draws criticism is that the hands of promoters are all over the decision making. Why was a three year inactive, fat fighter, Bermane Stiverne even considered for mandatory status? That initial decision and the subsequent sanctioning of his fight against Wilder as a mandatory defence was the start of all this. It's not Breazeale's fault.

As above, that would've been for 'second mandatory' behind Breazeale and at the rate Wilder actually fights his mandatories...

While you are right, even if Whyte had fought and won the required eliminator it doesn't mean he'd get a mandatory shot. When he was ordered to fight Ortiz that was for the 2nd mandatory shot and in all honesty what does that even mean, there's nothing in their rules about a 2nd mandatory, does that even guarantee you the next mandatory shot or can the WBC mandate another final eliminator for the 1st mandatory spot and force the 2nd Mandatory to continue to wait?

Remember when Fury beat Johnson in a WBC eliminator? But when Vitali vacated the WBC belt and they mandated a vacant title shot did they pick Fury who was the only person that had won an eliminator? Nope they picked Bermane Stiverne who had just won the WBC silver title, the title Whyte now holds, and put him in with Arreola who had already lost to Stiverne and had recently won the WBC international title vs Seth Mitchell.

    WBC simply are not consistent.

Stiverne was matched against Povetkin in an eliminator. Povetkin tested dirty and Stiverne became the mandatory.

They both tested dirty, but Povetkin was already on watch for Meldonium, and Stiverne used the tainted food supplement excuse. Then Stiverne got a new opponent (Ortiz) who he obviously didn't wanted to fight because he would get spanked. Then the WBC in all their wisdom made him mandatory anyway, without a fight and without a single legit win for 3½ years.

That doesn't really add up. Sitverne filled in for Ortiz against Wilder because Ortiz was on blood pressure meds. Ortiz was cleared after Stiverne got creamed and took his fight with Wilder.

2nd mandatory puts him into the same position that Dominic Wade was in when he became mandatory after the previous incumbent Tureano Johnson got injured before he could face GGG. Remember, Wade became mandatory in that instance. If Brazeale had dropped out, Whyte in theory could have take his place. I think WBC was applying a similar principle here...though, it feels weird using the word "principle" and a sanctioning body in the same sentence.

I mean, I realize and agree that the WBC are ridiculously inconsistent in the way that they enforce their mandatory challenges, and you can certainly question their rankings...But at some point, Brazeale was going to be getting a title shot based on his initial status as mandatory, regardless of who held their world title.

As for Whyte, it's too bad he's been passed over, yeah...But he has opted out of a couple of eliminators (against Pulev and Ortiz) and reportedly balked at the idea of facing AJ in a rematch for the championship in April. Being a legit top three to five contender in the division is all well and good, but if he wasn't willing to contend for the championship when given the chance, I can't feel that sorry for the guy.

Word on the street is the Marsellos Wilder vs William Deets rematch is going to be a final eliminator for the WBC CW title when it eventually happens.
