Seriously...this guy was nothing special even in his prime. Got cold clocked by some random bum, nuked by Lewis, ran for his life and robbed a 137 year old Foreman and got a gift draw against Botha...and now 20 YEARS later he is being put in matchups with genuine contenders/fringe guys and is given a chance...what the hell?

He's an entertaining troll and it's funny sometimes. He plays his part in boxing and gives it a little more recognition like for example I see his stints on world star from time to time.

Briggs is relevant because he's an old ex champion that is begging to be knocked out, but nobody really wants to. There's almost no upside in beating him unless you can get the knockout. He's a tough out (even though he's there to be hit) and seems very determined now that he's older (not unlike Big George).

It's always some kind of excuse with his losses too. The most recent loss was because he tore his bicep supposedly in the first round. That was the whole reason Vitali busted him up and boxed his face in according to Briggs. He's always been very dismissive of Vitali even after getting the **** knocked out of him. "Ohh and I staggered him with a right hand in the 10th round even with one arm CHAMP!!!" Lol He didn't stagger **** in that whole fight. But he sure as hell was rocked a bunch. Briggs will get knocked the **** out against ANY top 5 heavyweight and personally I can't wait to see it.

A great question ...one that I don't have a great answer to. Basically, it boils down to the lack of depth in the HW division and Shannon Briggs' ego. He probably believes that he is as good (or nearly as good)as many of the people that have gotten recent title shots (Martin, Stiverne, Arreola, Mormeck, Pianeta, Leapai, etc.). As a result, he'll remain in the conversation...as evidenced by this thread... if he keeps winning and the champs run out of people to fight.

Thank White Wolf for his last minute unraveling against Briggs... Had he taken care of business Briggs would be 100% irrelevant today.

    Yes

He is only seen as legit due to his aggressive self promotion and constant pursuit of other fighters

Being predatory to other fighters out in public sells the Briggs name

He's a good guy and is very likeable. Don't see why people have a problem with him .
. listen to him on the Joe rogan podcast.
He's been great for the sport. I hope he snags that wba strap for himself.

He probably has the ability to earn the WBA some cash.
People will want to pay to see him getting ko'd

Boxing very seldom follows a merit system and thats exactly why someone like Shannon Briggs is still relevant in some way in the Heavyweight division.
Politics and a media driven avalanche that gives press to loudmouth do nothings like Shannon Briggs is what keeps him relevant.
