The press nicknamed this fight,,," 30 seconds over Tokyo" he was at least 42 to 1. Around the 5th round I sat up and remember saying, Tyson is getting his azz kicked, this ain't possible! Yes it is the greatest upset in history

 

Tyson was considered unbeatable when Douglas beat him! Buster was 42-1 underdog and Tyson was far better than Tate! Was Weaver a 42-1 underdog? Tate wasn`t a global superstar like Mike was at that time.

 

When Tyson got beat by Buster he was universally considered the P4P best fighter in the world whereas Curry was neck and neck with Hagler in that regard, if Curry had of stayed unbeaten up to the point in 1988 when Tyson beat Spinks thenMike would been rated above Curry P4P, I don`t know who was rated higher between Lloyd and Buster in their respective divisions but Buster had lost to a couple of bums.

 

It wasn't just a matter of fame, or casuals buying into his mystique. Pretty much every contemporary boxing analyst considered him, until he lost, a once in a lifetime sort of talent. A guy that would make future generations say things like "Joe and Muhammad and Rocky who??? "

Combine that fame @CST80 mentioned combined with the critical accolades of, say, a Lomachenko...if he never had lost to Salido.

He was the closest thimg to a real life X-Men type superhero or person with superpowers. Like if wolverine took up boxing and got beat by a gatekeeper -- though a very talented and at the time motivated one at that.

 

That upset is still the biggest upset in the history of boxing IMO. The second one is Ali beat Foreman by way of K.O. in round 8. Most people thought that Ali could be slaughtered in the ring.

 

At the ripe age of 16 years old, he was astonishingly working full grown men in embarrassing fashion all wins by sportscaster top 10 highlight tell KO's. And the competition he was facing was very good. He tore through the western Massachusetts/New England Golden Gloves at 16 like a hot knofe through butter and would have won New Englands if he wasnt disqualified. He sparred again st all the fighters who ended up being great from that era, from Lewis to Bowa and so on and he destroyed them all. BADLY.

 

Because no one had ever come close to beating Tyson. Everyone viewed him as unbeatable. If nobody gave then 1 contender Evander Holyfield a chance then why would give Buster Douglas a chance?

This. People who weren't around have no idea. Its like ive had people tell me they know MJ was great because they've watched a lot of his highlights but hes not what people make him out to be. Unless you were there to witness it as it happened no amount of highlights or stat books can ever do him justice.
