Why is Canelo not getting more criticism for fighting Yildrim?

Whelp, the Yildirim fight was a true classic.

So nice to see Canelo testing himself against the best.

For a moment I thought that Avni was going to win that back-and-forth war, but Canelo somehow pulled it out of the bag.

I'd been predicting a total beatdown of Yildirim, and boy, was I wrong.

There's many valid criticisms of Canelo.

The people he fights is not one of them.

 

Yeah, the three years between Lara and GGG were fairly meaningless, but his oppositions since have been terrific. If he also could stop with the short notice stuff etc, he could really step into the role of a great champion.

Short of Bivol and Beterbiev, BJS and Plant are the fights that really make sense for him now.

 

Cotto was a top fight, the rest were not. That's the peak time when he might have been considered a ducker. But since then he's proven his willingness to fight the best in my opinion.

I'm not as bothered about the short notice stuff tbh, especially not in terms of historical comparisons.

I'd say the one person you could maybe accuse him of avoiding is Beterbiev since he's outright said he has no intention of returning to LHW, but for a former LMW I don't hold that against him.

BJS and Plant give a massive boost to his legacy.

I don't like the short notice and rehydration clauses etc, since it does cast a shadow. Probably doesn't make much difference, but why then insist on it? Just do it clean, so we don't have to have this discussion.

 

He said he wanted to become the greatest Mexican boxer of all time. The only way he could do that is by beating Beterbiev and Bivol. That would put him in the discussion.
