Why is Canelo not getting more criticism for fighting Yildrim?

I agree people need to earn their shots. But we can look at the Fielding and Smiths and scratch our heads as to what they did to earn it. I also think gimme fights are justified when fighting four three to four times a year. I was only curious about the line, “it will always be somebody else.” Perhaps I misunderstood the intent of that statement. I’m not the sharpest knife in the shed. Maybe I should make like a tree and get out of here.

 

Smith did enough, especially given that Canelo was moving up/recently moved up. There may have been a gulf in quality and Smith's win in the super series being over a past it and injured Groves, but at the time it was a good scalp and belt. Fielding, absolutely agreed chance wasn't deserved

 

Well I never imagined there would be a day where holding a title isn't enough to validate you as opponent. I agree fielding was ridiculous but he was a champion.

I meant regardless of who a guy like Canelo fights someone will always say he's ducking blank. Once he beats blank then it'll be blank 2.0 and so forth. If you already hate the guy you won't ever be satisfied with anything he does. (And I don't mean you specifically because I don't know your stance on Alvarez)

 

These kinds of things weren’t said in the past because champions fought pretty much every reasonable contender around. The problem is with so many belts. Any name fighter with pull can pick and choose which champion he wants to face and often it’s the weakest of the four to claim “I won a championship in another division”.

 

Plant is more established then BJS, a more known commodity in my opinion, and also a better fighter.

 

Would like to see Alvarez Beterbiev, Alvarez Bivol, Alvarez Golovkin III, . We are getting Alvarez BJS. This was a rubbish fight but we got C.Smith, Kovalev, Jacobs, Fielding, Golovkin, Golovkin. I'd say he's fighting pretty good opposition TBH and deserves a day off.

 

I think it's too many divisions rather than too many belts imo. I don't think that was the case once these guys saw business paths to follow to maximize their earnings, then picking and choosing started and especially after fans really stopped accepting loses as part of a fighters career. Now with every loss people want your career to be over. So these fighters have been drinking out of a toxic well they helped make with the fans and here's our result.

 

The divisions are fine. But how many belts do we need? In the 80s it was WBC, IBF and WBA. Then WBO starting gaining recognition after. Might as well call every fighter in the top 10 rankings a world champion. Where does it end?

 

Exactly! It's not the number of divisions, it's the 4-5 guys calling themselves "Champ" while pretending he others don't exist.
