Why is Chagev called "white Tyson"

I will try, you remember the way Chagaev was able to fight Valuev at different angles and get alot of his shots off, especially the left hook? Wlad is not very defensively sound, and as me and you both know Wlad's chin is about as weak as they come. Chagaev also showed pretty good head movement against Valuev, and made him miss frequently.

I'm not favoring Chagaev, but he is a pretty good Heavyweight with above average power and chin, so I dont see him being an easy task for Wlad. If Chagaev goes into this match looking to land that big left hook whenever he sees and opening, I think he got he got a shot. He must aslo work hard the inside as well and stop Wlad from clinching him when ever possible.

 

You guys got it all wrong, it's really Tyson who is "The Black Chagaev"....

....but seriously when he first came up, Chagaev was knocking out a lot of bums, I remember his first fight with Rob Calloway, he ran right over poor rob, but he did look very sloppy and crude. After watching that fight, I thought Chagaev was just another crude European Heavyweight, only later on did I become aware of his amateur pedigree, olympics and beating Felix Savon twice. He has turned into a pretty good heavyweight in recent years, beating Virchis, Ruiz and Valuev (albeit all by very small margins) is impressive in today's HW division. I don't think this last fight is indicitive of his real talent, maybe he is still recuperating from his hepatitis scare, I dont know.

 

Chagaev is a dangerous heavyweight for anyone because he proved right there against Valuev ( and against many before him such as Ruiz and Sprott) that he has above average handspeed and is heavy handed. I didn't see a lot of head movement against Valuev but he showed ring intelligence because he was concentrated on beating the russian mountain of a man to the punch with awkward but accurate volleys of punches from southpaw stance and when pressed against corners... I guess you can call that defense.

I don't think Wlad would panick against this guy and at this point as it is visible in that avatar pic of yours ( against Peter) so that that opening would appear - the chance can appear if Wladimir gets reckless ( unusual to say the least), not if Chagaev presses to create that opening cause he would eat a lot of left jabs and be set off while he would be doing so... In that concern, I believe Iggy would have a better chance because he is always on the move and inverts the action on the fast countermove, looking to get that left volley in.

great point. i am starting to think sultan may give him a better fight in large part because of his movement and awkward style. i also like his two-fisted skill. the big question i have about sultan is how he will react afters getting hit with that first big right cross?

 

Great post, I just think Wlad still has a very weak chin that just hasnt been tapped since Peter, and it's only a matter of time before Wlad panics and he gets knocked out again, history will repeat itself, mark my words.

 

I don't think he will react or retaliate so he will most probably try to shake it off or avoid getting hit solid with it and again, it has a lot to do with moving, getting in and out, circling to his right like lefties ought to do. I guess there is a risk betting on this one and that's exactly where many can capitalise - either on Wlad's right or Iggy's left, that would be.

 

I personally can't see how can you improve a chin and there are many chances to get tagged clean on the whiskers at this weight class and at this level... But that goes for Wladimir and for others such are the hazzards of the profession, better not get caught at all.

Chag apparently didn't dazzle and amaze against Skelton, from what I've read. This is rather sad, given that he was the one who I had at second overall.

But he did just get over a supposed stomach ailment, so maybe we should consider that and cut him some slack for this fight's lackluster showing. At least he did win.
