Lets be fair and frank, Miguel Cotto is a very good fighter, but he is no "Great" yet people talk about him as though he may have had a chance to beat Floyd, or like he's some ATG.

Cotto is a very good fighter, in the same bracket as current fighters like Mikkel Kessler.

    He is no ATG!!!!

In the grand scheme of things a good fighter though one who clearly has his limitations.

He did once look like the next big thing, though in my opinion fell a little short in the end and I'd have Floyd beating him all day long at any time.

I sort of agree but Cotto is very popular so this thread won't get much love. He didn't really do a whole lot at 140. Paulie Malignaggi? Ricardo Torres? Meh.

At 147, the best thing he did was beat Mosley and Judah, Mosley being well past his prime and Judah being boxings perpetual joke. Maybe Clottey I guess, but lots of people thought he lost that fight.

I don't think he has enough wins over decent names to be an all time great.

I agree with this.I also believe people have a tendency to like him quite easily because he comes across like a gentleman.

Agreed, or at least he has more strings to his bow.

Because he's "likeable". Winning and winning impressively don't matter so much on ESB.

I've yet to hear or read anyone that considers him an all time great.

I think that it is because he is a nice guy and he's a star in PR so i guess his shortcomings get overlooked

He is rated highly because he is good.

Who has touted him as the guy to beat Mayweather since he lost to Margarito? :huh

    Who exactly is overrating him?

Can't agree. Mosley dominated the LW division, KOed every challenger for his title, jumped 2 weight classes to beat a still relevant Oscar De La Hoya, won titles at 154 beating guys like Vargas, DLH and then dropped back down to lift a title from Margarito, who he destroyed in unheard of fashion.

Mosley is a 3 division champ, holding multiple titles at WW. Cotto only 2. Mosley has more wins over potential HOFers than Cotto.

Cotto just doesn;t have the names there.

he's a very good fighter and he's never been in a bad fight. you always get your money's worth with Cotto.

and yes, he has a chance to beat Floyd. Much better chance than Ortiz that's for sure. Cotto's style poses more problems for Floyd than Ortiz'. Cotto understands what going on in the ring better than Ortiz.

He clearly had an elite sense of timing, a sharp set of skills, a stiff jab, a decent defense, and a great offensive arsenal which included a bomb of a left hook and a brutal body attack. He's got one of the deepest resumes compared against his contemporaries, and before Margarito looked like something special.

Nobody ever really thought Cotto would dominate Floyd, but people gave him a shot, and rightly so, because he's a damn good fighter with a potentially troublesome style.
