although he lost all his biggest fights hes a modern day great based on the opponents his fought&obviously being a 6 weight world champ doesnt hurt his case either.

well to me its quite easy and obvious...

when your pretty much equal (losing close fights to great fighters) to the other great fighters youve faced (Mosley, Tito, Mayweather) and beating other elites, its pretty safe to say your great imo.

Hoya is a guy where anyone who just LOOKS at his record and tries to make an assumption on him will be wrong

tito fight (a great fighter) could have gone eather way
Mosley 2 (considered a great fighter, or at least close to) could have gone eather way
Mayweather (a great fighter) was mayweathers closest fight

just as many times as people think he should have lost (whit, ike, sturm) there are times where others think he could or should have won (mosley 2, tito, mayweather)

when your on such a level playing field with your fellow greats, its obviously because your on their level.

Go with the facts, he beat Whitaker?. You were doing well until you metioned that fight, then screwed it up.

Some people may ask "why is Sugar Ray Leonard called great" and be of the opinion he lost to Hagler and the Hearns rematch.

Thomas Hearns lost two massive fights to Hagler and Leonard, and lost twice to Iran Barkley. De La Hoya has never lost to anyone as poor as Barkley.

    Was Hearns great?

Whatever you say about his resume, he was a truly great fighter in practical terms.

Resume isn't the only thing that makes you great, DLH was an awesome fighter in his prime.

if u consider strictly boxing resume i dont think he was great, But the fact of the matter is he transcended the sport he had true crossover appeal. common every day people knew who he was, he entered into the rare air of say a tiger woods, micheal jordan, mike tyson, the rock! , so in that sense he was great yes.

He beat both Whitaker and Chavez when they were Champions. Both of them are all time great legends.

Had Oscar beat Mosley in the first fight, nobody would even call that a huge win. However, since he lost... it was a mega fight that he lost. Had Vargas or Quartey beat Oscar, people would say those were mega-fights that he lost... since Oscar beat them both... people don't want to consider them mega fights. Same with Mayorga, and so on.

Couple that along with the fact that even know 90% of boxing fans know that Oscar beat Tito, and Mosley in their 2nd fight... even counting them as losses, Oscar has NEVER been outclassed, and has been competitive in every single fight that he has been in. Even in the Hopkins fight before being caught with that body shot. I still even think that Oscar beat Mayweather... however I must admit that I didn't count Mayweather feather dusting Oscar's gloves as landed punches like most people did.

Because he beat Whitaker; who, according to some in this forum, is the greatest, most phenomenally talented, and peerlessly skilled boxer there ever has been or ever will be.

He fought most of the best in an era when hardly anyone fights all the best. He won some, he lost some. Still a great fighter, one whose resume somewhat outdoes his quality as a fighter though, it must be said.

Don't be mad because you couldn't come up with any semblance of a legitimate argument for Jones in the other thread. Face it, you're a joke.

It may have been; however, after De La Hoya made so many demands on the contract BEFORE the fight, it makes him look even more ridiculous considering the fact he STILL lost the fight. :patsch
