Why is Dempsey vs Firpo highly edited film?

Obviously this writer is rooting for Firpo.
He doesn't seem aware of the 20 second rule.
And he seems to say that Dempseys fall was cushioned, but that he got back in the ring alone.

    What are your guys' interpretations?

I love how the first thing he sees when he reenters the ring, is a right hand laser inches from his face.

Firpo was fighting handicapped by a humerus bone fracture.

I have read where Dempsey himself admitted to asking for help to get back in and getting it.

Firpo had a dislocated left elbow which was snapped back in place the day prior to fight time. Fleischer was in Firpos dressing room when the doctor initially wanted to postpone the bout and then watched in horror as the doctor snapped his elbow in place without as much as a whimper emminating from Firpos lips.

Firpo insisted that the bout go on screaming "I can beat Dempsey....it is nothing". To prove he was fight ready he slammed both fists down upon a metal table grinning and making no indication he was in pain. Fleischer noted that the beads of sweat that poured down Firpos face revealed he was in agony but he refused to show it.

The newspapers at the time seized on the fact that the film is edited where Dempsey is helped back into the ring. They believed that this edit was done to hide the fact that Dempsey had been out of the ring too long and assisted back in, both violations. Rickard even admitted that the film was edited at his instruction but said it was done because a fan became excited at the knockdown, stood up, and blocked the view. None of this is true though. A friend of mine came across an unedited version of the film several years ago which shows that Dempsey was not out of the ring for more than 10 seconds and no man stands in front of the camera. You cannot see if Dempsey is assisted into the ring because he is out of the frame. Frankly I think its a non issue. Firpo had a lot better argument for No Contest or DQ win because Dempsey violated the rules of the New York State Athletic Commission as dictated by the Walker Law when he repeatedly stood over Firpo as Firpo was down. But, that never happened so no crying over spilled milk.

The one curious edit is from the right hand landed by Firpo seconds into the bout that nearly floors Dempsey. It appears that a few seconds that would show Dempsey clutching onto Firpos waist to keep from hitting the canvas.

I'm finding the same thing pretty much. The article seems to have been written by someone who was not an eyewitness but read opinions about the fight from Dempsey detractors on a boxing forum.

    Really?

    31 Wins (26 Knockouts), 4 Defeats, 2 No Contests

All with just one hand? Very impressive!

There was no 20 second rule at that time. You had 10 seconds to get back into the ring.

WOW, so by rules Firpo should have been the next champ. The editing of the fall out of the ring is obvious! Are these neck blows edited out of the film too?

Was there any call for a re-match?

My thoughts are Dempsey was lucky reporters broke his fall and assisted back into the ring. By rules, Firpo should be the next champion, or at the very least deserved a rematch. There is no real debate here.

Controversy surrounds Dempsey, not only in this match. His stoppage of Sharkey ( Sharkey was winning the fight ) with low blows landed, and the alleged loaded glove incident with Willard makes his career that much harder to evaluate. And his prime was short.

A fight with Wills or Greb would have shown us how good he was.

I think he was likely the best heavyweight around for a while, but we'll never know.

Who he didn't fight, and the controversy surrounding his biggest wins shrouds his career as much as a KO 1 loss to Flynn, and the decision losses to Meehan.
