That report is cr*p written years after and its facts are total bullsh*t Dempsey wasn't coming off of two fights with Tunney he hadn't even fought him! You of course ,with your long documented history of attacking Dempsey want to believe it. When Dempsey fell out of the ring he tore his anus open on a type writer, the typewriter belonged to Jack Lawrence the sports writer for the NY Tribune .Lawrence later said Dempsey was raging and twisting about trying to get back in the ring ,Lawrence reported Dempsey as saying to him"you big bast*rd get me back in there; get me back in there,I'll fix him" . Dempsey grabbed for the lower ring rope and in doing so punched Kid McPartland, one of the judges in the eye. Lawrence and Perry Grogan a Western Union Morse operator pushed Dempsey back in the ring and later defending their actions said they were doing it to get Dempsey off of themselves and not to assist him.n Dempsey was back in the ring at the count of NINE! At the bell both men were throwing punches, Firpo dropped his hands Dempsey, fighting on pure instinct threw three more left hooks with no steam on them. While his body was out of the ring Dempsey was flailing with his arms and kicking with his feet trying to regain his equilibrium . The sports writers who pushed Dempsey were motivated by self preservation trying to get Dempsey away from them, and not from concern about pushing him back into the action. Kearns poured a bucket of water over Dempseys head in between rounds and screamed at corner man Jerry Luvardis to "get the smelling salts",which were in Kearns breast pocket.Jerry the Greek kept pointing to Kearns pocket and Kearns kept shouting get the salts! Luvardis eventually reached for Kearns pocket and Kearns punched him ! All Dempsey said while this hullabaloo was going on was "what round is it?" A lot of people think this fight was responsible for the neutral corner rule being introduced,it wasn't. The rule was already on the books and worded as follows. "When a contestant is down, his opponent shall retire to the farthest neutral corner and remain there until the count is completed.Should he fail to do so,the referee and timekeeper may cease counting until he has so retired" The referee Johnny Gallagher was at fault for not applying the rules correctly and Dempsey for taking advantage of that. Gallagher permitted Dempsey to stand over the fallen Firpo and he made the most of it. After the fight the rules were amended to the following, the word may was changed to must. In the wake of the assistance Dempsey had received getting back in the ring, which he felt should have prompted Dempsey's dsq Nat Fleischer led a campaign to have a clarification of the rules concerning boxer being knocked out of the ring. The existing rules were somewhat ambiguous;ie "If a fighter did not return to the ring immediately the refreee may count him out as if he were down" There was no mention of aid /assistance in returning to the ring. The rule was re-worded to. "Any boxer who is knocked out of the ring is required to return within ten seconds under his own power" Four years to the month later Dempsey had Tunney on the floor and paid the price for not going to a neutral corner,
It's easy to see in most versions of the film that Dempsey isn't out of the ring for long, because actually when the view cuts from close to long you can see the referee is in exactly the same position and motion, there's continuity and even overlap. Nothing is missed. Nothing edited out. He climbed back in (or was pushed back in) more or less immediately.
Still the best fight ever...No dancing...no shuffles...no waving to the crowd...no entrance music..not coming into the ring with 10 people screaming... and all that kind of crap!!! I hit you...you hit me...see who's left standing!!! 'Nuff said!!!
Firpo went down 7 times. Are all those knockdowns on film? You tell me Unforgiven. If Klompton is reading, he's rather familiar with films and cut out pieces. I suspect he would have a field day here. The primary issue is was Dempsey helped back into the ring. The answer is yes. So the fight should be a DQ or NC. The secondary issue is how long was he out of the ring.
Bawahaha, you are unintentionally funny! Queensberry Rules, which were written long before this match To be a fair stand-up boxing match in a 24-foot ring, or as near that size as practicable. No wrestling or hugging allowed. The rounds to be of three minutes' duration, and one minute's time between rounds. This content is protected 10 seconds to be allowed him to do so, the other man meanwhile to return to his corner, and when the fallen man is on his legs the round is to be resumed and continued until the three minutes have expired. If one man fails to come to the scratch in the 10 seconds allowed, it shall be in the power of the referee to give his award in favour of the other man. A man hanging on the ropes in a helpless state, with his toes off the ground, shall be considered down. No seconds or any other person to be allowed in the ring during the rounds. Should the contest be stopped by any unavoidable interference, the referee to name the time and place as soon as possible for finishing the contest; so that the match must be won and lost, unless the backers of both men agree to draw the stakes. The gloves to be fair-sized boxing gloves of the best quality and new. Should a glove burst, or come off, it must be replaced to the referee's satisfaction. A man on one knee is considered down and if struck is entitled to the stakes. That no shoes or boots with spikes or springs be allowed. The contest in all other respects to be governed by revised London Prize Ring Rules. Dempsey was assisted.
It's been proven time and time again Dempsey had no loaded gloves for his bout with Willard. We have eye witness accounts of the hand taping, we have close up photos of Dempsey in his corner with his hands ungloved, we can see Dempsey during the fight that clearly shows he is not grasping anything within the palm of his left glove and we have the testing done by a modern hwt who punched a heavy bag with plaster of Paris laden bandages which quickly disintegrated. Dempseys GLOVES WERE NOT LOADED. Regarding his bout with Sharkey it's quite clear that none of the three blows prior to the KO left hook were low. On the belt line yes but not low. Furthermore the doctor assigned to the bout found no injuries that would indicate a low blow. The referee for the bout was adamant that none of those three blows were low. He stated that BOTH fighters were guilty of low blows but none flagrant and further stated that neither Sharkey nor his corner ever complained of low blows during the bout.
more rules You cannot hit below the belt, hold, trip, kick, headbutt, wrestle, bite, spit on, or push your opponent. You cannot hit with your head, shoulder, forearm, or elbow. You cannot hit with an open glove, the inside of the glove, the wrist, the backhand, or the side of the hand. You cannot punch your opponent's back, or the back of his head or neck (rabbit punch), or on the kidneys (kidney punch). You cannot throw a punch while holding on to the ropes to gain leverage. You can't hold your opponent and hit him at the same time, or duck so low that your head is below your opponent's belt line. When the referee breaks you from a clinch, you have to take a full step back; you cannot immediately hit your opponent--that's called "hitting on the break" and is illegal. You cannot spit out your mouthpiece on purpose to get a rest. If you score a knockdown of your opponent, you must go to the farthest neutral corner while the referee makes the count. If you "floor" your opponent, you cannot hit him when he's on the canvas. A floored boxer has up to ten seconds to get back up on his feet before losing the bout by knockout. A boxer who is knocked down cannot be saved by the bell in any round, depending upon the local jurisdiction's rules. A boxer who is hit with an accidental low blow has up to five minutes to recover. If s/he cannot continue after five minutes, s/he is considered knocked out. If the foul results in an injury that causes the fight to end immediately, the boxer who committed the foul is disqualified. If the foul causes an injury but the bout continues, the referee orders the judges to deduct two points from the boxer who caused the injury. If an unintentional foul causes the bout to be stopped immediately, the bout is ruled a "no contest" if four rounds have not been fully completed. (If the bout was scheduled for four rounds, then three rounds must have been completed.) If four rounds have been completed, the judges' scorecards are tallied and the fighter who is ahead on points is awarded a technical decision. If the scores are even, it will be called a "technical draw." This content is protected In some jurisdictions the standing eight-count or the three knockdown rule also may be in effect. In other jurisdictions, only the referee can stop the bout. >> Of course Jack Sharkey wishes the rules were upheld as Dempsey went low a few times on film to win.
Perry, Sharkey is complaining on film from the low blows to the referee.. Dempsey uses the moment to knock him out with a hook he didn't see coming! To say that Sharkey did not complain is 100% false. Let's call it as it happened. Come on man.
Your doggone right! I have a great cartoon from that time showing Dempsey as a caveman and having slated Firpo with a club. I had it blown up, framed and sits proudly in my living room. The ultimate fight, by the ultimate pure fighter!
A boxing rule was blatantly violated with referee approval which gave Dempsey an overwhelming unfair advantage and the win but let's not cry over spilt milk? BTW I strongly suspect that if it been Firpo doing that to Dempsey in Argentina with an Argentinean ref's approval then it would not have been merely spilt milk.
Once again read what I wrote. No doubt Sharkey was in agony over legit body blows but if you watch the film and walk away thinking they hit anything else but his belly please buy some good glasses. All the talk Sharkey was hit in the balls by those three body blows is complete hocum. Remember Sharkey stated this: "When Dempsey hit you to the body it felt as if his fist was coming out your back". "I never thought anyone could hit that hard". Dempsey was a monster body puncher and Sharkey did not like it to the body.
Firpo was down 9 times! 7 times in the first rd Dempsey three all in the first rd . There was no ruling about fighters being helped back into the ring prior to the Firpo fight can you not grasp that? Dempsey could have been penalised for not going to a neutral corner after he scored knockdown as the rules stipulated but the referee did not enforce them for either man! Dempsey was back in the ring at the count of NINE! You stupid C*NT that rule is for boxers knocked down in the ring there was no ruling about a boxer being aided assisted if he was outside the ring the rule came in as a direct result of Nat Fleischer lobbying for a clarification of the rules after this fight! Cant you get someone to read posts and explain them to you RainMan?
