There was a time in America where being an American Heavyweight Champion of the world meant something. Like almost everyone in the US knew who Muhammad Ali or Mike Tyson were.

But fast forward to today and we have Deontay Wilder, an American Heavyweight champion of the world with 39 knockouts and most people in the US don't even know he is. Even in Wilder's homestate of Alabama, there are some ppl don't know who he is.

So what gives? Why is Wilder not the people's champ?

So how is it that Most Americans seem to have paid attention for guys like Ali and Tyson but not for Wilder?

Because the 1970s and 1980s were nearly a half-century ago. Times change. The greatest U.S. athlete of the 1970s (Bruce Jenner) is now a grandma.

I like Wilder and he does have the raw ingredients to be a star, but he fights bums as a matter of routine.

Yes, so did Tyson to some extent, but Wilder is ignoring obvious options whereas at least Iron Mike fought Michael Spinks, Old but still very good Larry Holmes, Bonecrusher Smith, Frank Bruno, Razor Ruddock.

    Wilder feasts on wreckage

So, you're saying if Deontay Wilder fought Andre Ward and John Ruiz and Chris Byrd and Trevor Bryan, he'd be more popular?

    Please.

According to Wilder himself he is king in the US. Although I don't know if he's going to be punished by his masters Al and Finkel for saying that.

I'm British and like his highlight reel stuff but his selection of fights lamentable.

2 fights in his career that mean anything. 44 year old Ortiz (who nearly KOd him) and back from the brink Fury who he scrape a draw with.

I think he personally is a warrior but he's being micromanaged by people who don't want him knocked out.

Fighting Breazele now is simply unacceptable

Deontay Wilder is the most famous active boxer not only in the United States but in the entire world.

ESPN, the leading sports broadcaster in the nation, said so.

    http://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/26113613/espn-world-fame-100-2019

Wilder is on top! There are no boxers more popular than Wilder, according to ESPN. (And they just signed Fury.)

DAZN and ESPN are emptying their bank vaults trying to sign him. Aren't they?

So, maybe the person who started this thread should get with the times.

According to ESPN, he is the King, also. Not only in the U.S. He's the most famous boxer in the world.

Guys from other countries start threads every week wondering why he isn't more popular with the mainstream, because Wilder is so famous around the world they can't help thinking about him.

When they think of boxing, they think of Deontay Wilder.

We're in one of those threads now.

It’s a few things, and I like Wilder but these are some of the things I’ve heard or read people say about him on more then one occasion
    1. He’s limited
    2. His interviews can be cringeworthy
    3. He talks in 3rd person way too much
    4. He does that stupid I’m whispering to show how serious what I’m saying is

Exactly. And if there's one thing we can say, Ali and Tyson interviews were never cringeworthy. (That's sarcasm)

Deontay Wilder is just fine. He's rich. He's the most famous boxer in the world. He's flattened everyone he's fought. He's never lost. People can't stop talking about him.

Boxing is no where near as popular as it was in previous decades

    Ali and Tyson are exceptions

America has a much higher bar than the rest of the world. It takes a lot to grab the public attention
