My girlfriend and friends know who David Haye is, they have no idea who Vitali is. They are not boxing fans, just casual sports fans. Case, Haye has made more waves in boxing than the Klit brothers in years. You dont have to be a Haye fanboy to realise that.
Are you serious? They both speak English just fine. Also, they wouldn't have to put them on any special show. An interview during last weeks Friday Night Fights would have been just fine. Possibly they can do a tape delayed duel interview this week on FNF, as they aren't going to be up in the middle of the night with a fight the next day half way across the world, of course. Gomez has been talking all kinds of smack every time that he gets a mic in front of him, and you know how people eat that up. A simple duel interview would do wonders for this fights marketing. Are you now going to tell me that they don't have the time or money to do a couple minute interview during FNF?:-( Once again, you are really reaching by acting like ESPN just can't pull anything off because the strict budget. That's just nonsense honestly. ESPN can't put the money together for a few highlights, a commercial, or a simple interview? C'mon already. Once again, you are completely overlooking the fact that marketing events like this pay for themselves on the back end. They have a chance to REALLY get the ball rolling for some great fights and huge interest in ESPN. The more ratings, the more sponsorship & advertisement money they make, you know that. It makes no sense that they could book fights like Vitali vs Gomez and Peter vs Chambers but they just don't have the funds to advertise that those fights are going to take place? That's just silly.
Where the hell do you live?:think I live in the states, and I speak with casual boxing fans every day! I am honestly hard pressed to find ANYONE who knows who David Haye is. His media stunts haven't been played up in the states, and he sure as hell hasn't got any prime time boxing coverage that made waves in the States either. Yet, I can't think of a single casual boxing fan that I know who doesn't know who the Klitschkos are. I admit that sometimes people get them confused, but they definitely know the name.
This Widow guy reminds me of a kid who holds a red crayon in front of him and tries to STARE it into turning blue. Sorry, kid. No matter how hard you try to convince US, the hardcore boxing fans who will actually spend time typing opinions about the sport on a Monday night, the Klitschkos just aren't that popular in America with the casual fans who just watch the big fights if their friends are getting together. Dr. Ironfist and Steelhammer both had their chances, and both failed to win the audience. This fight is nothing more than filler for ESPN who knows that everyone and their mama is gonna watch college basketball...except for the hardcore fans at their computers like the ones on this thread. They don't need to market it to people that are already gonna watch it...and the people who weren't gonna watch it before the ads are the same ones who wouldn't have watched it after. Think I'm kidding? ESPN already tried promoting a PPV card with Margarito-Cintron and Shane Mosley on it. The commercial was on 20 times a day. AND IT FAILED! Of course I want boxing to be promoted on the same level as the NBA, NFL, MLB, etc. But can you blame the fans and network TV when crooked promoters like De La Hoya or Frank Warren screw us over with crap cards and charge us 59.95, especially when the aforementioned casual fan has never even seen a superstar talent like Juan Manuel Marquez because he doesn't have HBO or Showtime? Or how about the current champions like Vitali and Wlad who are safety first and while as a hardcore fan, I can see that it's all about winning, but the casual fan could care less. They want blood and guts. They want risk takers. They want boxers that will FIGHT FOR THE PEOPLE. And unfortunately, the vast amount of marquee names do not, because they're either scared to take on dangerous challenges (Calzaghe) or because their promoters won't put their golden geese at risk.
I can't believe that the "boxing fans" on here are actually defending and backing ESPN for not promoting the sport more.atsch
You had a question, and it was answered correctly. This is not the Iraqi information ministry, Widow. Oh, and before you try to spin it again (because you are WRONG), don't put words in my mouth. The point here at debate is not ESPN's overall lack of coverage, but the lack of coverage FOR THIS FIGHT ONLY. And as has been stated many times, in America, college basketball in March > Vitali. For reasons that are partially his fault. Like I said, overall I would like to see better coverage. But the amount of customer demand drives supply, not just because some Klitschko superfan like you demands it.
It wasn't answered correctly in my opinion. Just because there will be college basketball on is not a good excuse, imo. The fight broadcast is only on for 1 hour this Saturday. I am sure that they could pull viewers in for it with the right marketing strategy. The fact that so many viewers will be at the tv watching basketball already makes it an even better time to promote the **** out of this fight and get them to turn the channel to the Heavyweight Championship boxing match for an hour in between. Hell, it's only the second round of the tourny. Also use your head for a second. If the entire reason that ESPN doesn't want to market this fight is because they don't think anyone will bother watching because of March Madness... then why would they have sprung for the fight in the first place? You aren't even making sense.
ESPN should be hyping this to the gills -- this is almost a guaranteed KO/TKO. In this day and age of MMA as 'more entertaining,' if you have a KO sitting in your lap involving a HW world champ, you should be selling the heck out of it.
Since you know the ins and outs of this fight as well as the way NCAA Basketball works, tell me exactly what time window would this be? Just in case you wanted facts (which you consistently LEAVE OUT in your arguments), here's the schedule that day: *CBS: College Basketball coverage from 12PM ET-10PM ET *ESPN: Klitschko-Gomez coverage from 5PM ET-6PM ET There is no window there unless you move the fight (which you can't)...OR air it later, but it will no longer be live and the results will have been leaked. If this were any other Saturday, you might have had a point. But you are dreadfully, dreadfully wrong on this one. :deal
Because like I ALREADY wrote, since you probably can't read, they bought the fight as FILLER. They know that hardcore fight fans will watch it. They DON'T NEED TO MARKET IT TO THEM ANY FURTHER. For that demographic, it has sold itself and that alone will probably get it to finish second that day (albeit by a mile). ESPN is content to do that, because they are already fighting a losing battle. A world championship fight with a guaranteed audience is better than bass fishing or rodeo when it comes to ratings. ESPN will make its tiny dent on CBS and minimize losses. Then when live games are over, they will DOMINATE ratings again during SportsCenter when they cover the college basketball highlights for the other 14 hours to suck in the people who missed the games because of work, regional conflicts, controlling wives, etc. It's called COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS. Unfortunately, you must live in a cardboard box because aside from the Super Bowl, the NCAA Basketball Tournament is one of the few events every year that transcend sports. If you think I'm kidding, go to work tomorrow (that is, if you have a job...if you don't then go to your neighborhood bar) and see how many people who know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about basketball are in some sort of bracket pool. They will be watching the games even though for the better part of 11 months, they couldn't give a damn about it. That is what your "promotion" will be up against. I await your irrational blinded man-love for Klitschko response.
