I guess that's true. Fair enough...

15% are too young to know anything.
    15% literally know nothing.
10% are the true definition of "casuals" even if knowledgeable.
    30% are trolls.

If he was from Mongolia but everything else was equal, he would have been fighting in the US for many many years already as his greatness would have put him on that stage and the money wouldn't be there in Mongolia. So that may be a bad example, but I think I know where you're going with this point.

Mike Tyson could walk down a street in Thailand, Australia, Germany, Spain, America or Russia and EVERYONE would know who he is. That's what you call being famous.

Floyd gets paid so much because he is a marketing genius. Fact.

How can one break PPV records and continue to sell big if he's not famous?

You're right in that there is only a few countries of note however they include:
    USA
    Mexico
    Japan
    Argentina
    Philippines
    Australia
    Puerto Rico
    Germany
    Thailand

Combined those countries have well over 500,000,000 people! Do you really think Mayweather puts a dent in that number?

Because he is a tedious boxer who isn't interested in entertaining the fans, on top of that he has a thoroughly unappealing personality. If I'm staying up until 4am to watch a fight, it needs to be one that isn't going to send me to sleep.

Add the UK to that list, we fill stadiums! I'm sure Mayweather has his fans here but largely we follow our domestic scene and the exciting boxers from abroad.

I'm not sure how I missed the UK, thought I'd already wrote it >_<

Yeah we have a handful of hardcore and plenty of casual fans who jump on the big name brigade. Though I doubt the card last week would have done much to entice any Bitish folk to stay awake given how bad Vazquez/Bey was and...well...Bunce at 3AM is tiresome.

My question would be is he any less of a fighter because the "global media" hasn't covered him as extensively as Muhammad Ali for example.

I honestly think its because he only fight twice a year and he's never really ventured outside the United States. When you compare fighters like Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, and even Mike Tyson those fighters fought outside the states which enhanced there popularity……and Floyd hasn't done that.

I don't think he's any less of a fighter because of it though. Anybody with two eyes can see that Floyd is easily one of the greatest Boxers of his generation and the fact that some random news outlet in Europe isn't covering his every move doesn't diminish who he is as a fighter.

I stayed up and even managed to stay awake through the Vasquez robbery, two rounds of Mayweather Maidana and the next thing I know it's Sunday morning!

That's the point. He's selling those in AMERICA, not in the rest of the world.
Those domestic (!!!) PPV records suck so much by the way you Americans don't even realize it. Doing 800k to 1.6m buys on a population from 320 million is frickin' peanuts. That's realistically maybe 1 to 2% of the possible viewers reached, wich isn't a big audience for a 'major star' who only fights once or twice a year. Froch vs Groves II did 1m in the UK and Wlad vs Haye probably trashed that number in a much smaller country.
And most countries don't even broadcast Floydweather fights, so how can he be famous over there?
Other big moneymakers in boxing do that due to much larger audiences worldwide. Can you imagine that Shoe Shining recently got watched by an estimated 300 million people? That's almost the entire population of the US including babies, infants and elders.
