Well, people hated Oscar and Roy Jones when they were at the top, now they are quite revered. People that hate Floyd really only started watching boxing around 2008 and just run with crap spewed by the pacturds. There is a reason he is so well liked with other boxers and trainers.
I think it's a multitude of reasons why Floyd doesn't gain universal respect from people and he is partially to blame for it. Since around the Judah/Baldomir fight, Floyd changed his whole perception of boxing- before that point he was a guy who would take on all comers because he was trying his hardest to become the next cashcow of boxing. In the lighter weights, he was dominating most of his fights in a fan-friendly manner. He was a lot more offensively oriented and he never ducked or dodged anyone in the lighter weights- in fact he called out pretty much every champion from 130-140 to help increase his star power. The DLH fight was a watershed moment in his career, at that point he became the unequivocal P4P king and PPV cashcow, so his motives changed from fighting the best of the best to fighting guys who had some marketability behind them, and it seemed pretty evident as he went up in higher weights he was a bit more judicious with the guys he selected to fight. I will say this though, with all the ATG's from the past, especially the guys pre-1970's, a lot of those great champs, including the great Ray Robinson, took on dozens of tomato cans back in their heyday to keep busy between big fights. I mean some of the opponents held records well below .500 in the win-loss column, yet none of the ATG's get lambasted for it because they fought so frequently. Floyd doesn't get that luxury, even when he takes long sabbaticals off from fighting, he always comes back and takes on top-tier fighters/contenders/P4P elite champs. That can't be argued. I will say lastly, he's really toned down his whole arrogant image over the last couple years. These next 5 fights will be a truly defining moment in his career- depending on who he fights and how dominant he looks in his victories, he can surely catapult himself into top 10 ATG status at the end of this Showtime run.
Mayweather gets a ton of respect. Sure, he has his detractors, but most people are very much willing to recognize his talent and his promotional prowess.
Most people respects his skills but he just comes across as a not very likeable guy so people don't want to give it to him.
alot of top fighters often go un appreciated until they retire.. im almost certain floyd will be a great example of this. he likes to play the bad guy to so it aient hard to hate him for what he is like outside of the ring, mix that with his defensive non casual pleasing fighting style and you have a recipe for an all you can hate buffet
Floyd is respected by boxers and trainers who really know boxing unlike keyboard boxers. He gets paid by fans. You can't please everybody and at $30m/fight he has a big finger for his haters. His haters just happen to be the biggest trolls on this board.
First off, he's one of the most highly regarded today for his skill. People respect his skills. Trust that. People don't respect him as a person because he's douchey. I'm pretty objective though. All I care about is how he performs in the ring. In there he's friggin Picasso. Nah I don't think so. Ali has a lot more to his image and legend than Floyd. Political protests, come from behind wins, epic rivalries. Mayweather just has a great boxing skills. He'll be respected for his boxing. But he'll never be Ali. Like I've said before: Lebron can (and likely will) break Jordan's records. But Lebron will never be Jordan. He will never get that legendary status. He didn't have adversity. He doesn't have legendary games. By the numbers, Lebron may be better. But he'll never be the legend that Jordan is. Hell, he'll never be Magic or Bird either. Especially with all that flopping...but I digress. Mayweather may have GOAT skills, but he'll never be revered by all or the majority as the GOAT.
No doubt it is, it's the catchweightest thing around. The reason some complain is cause a lot people's perception of catchweights was colored by insight like this: "I look at Miguel Cotto as an undefeated fighter because he faced Pacquiao, but Pacquiao caught him at a catch weight. He wasn't the best Miguel Cotto. He was drained. He wasn't hydrated. "
What do u mean not respect enough? :huh There's a difference between not liking and not respecting. Many people may dislike his style or hate his persona and want to see him lose, but deep inside, they all respect him as a great boxer..
Yes yes and more yes. The man puts on 20lbs overnight already. This indicates that he is drained and has to remove a lot of water. Another few pounds means he has to dry out even further and this weakens a man. Floyd explained this himself in the past, alvarez is a bad case because he dyhydrates so much already. This is why Floyds team require a catchweight. Floyd has explained himself why catchweights are not right for this very reason.
Maybe bias in favor of Jordan. But honestly, I haven't seen any legendary games that compare to Jordan's games.

Boxing is a sport where you have to prove your worth rather than have it determined for you. Mayweather had opportunities to prove he is as good as you and I think he is, and he didn't take them. He will never be as respected as you want him to be, ever, for this reason." I think this is well said, he may go down as the best business savvy boxer in history and DEFINATELY go down as a great. However what will always hinder Floyd in a "greatest of all time" talk, in my opinion is that he didn't take the DANGEROUS fights. Floyd is great but we may never know how great he is/ could of been had he of fought a prime Paul Williams or a Pacquiao (with Pacquiao still being a possibility but not prime). Not to say Floyd doesn't deserve credit though as he was a force as he moved up in divisions and apprenantly the way he worked Corrales ( never seen the fight). Man...I wish someone would of bit the bullet and PAC-MAY could of happened as long as they didnt retire each other of course, but if that fight could of happened that would have been so epic.
