-is it the fact he beat the best fighters of 5 divisions over two generations of boxing (nearly 20 years) and still retired undefeated after 49 fights?
    - his ring genius, technical proficiency and untouchable defense?
    - his ability to compete at higher than natural weight classes and dominate their fighters eve when they come 25 to 30 lbs heavier than him on fight night?
    - his supreme confidence, charismatic personality and movie star good-looks?
    - his unshakeable confidence and deep belief in his superiority?
    - his championship pedigree?
    - his ability to generate tremendous interest and ppv numbers due to his understanding of the media and ability to exploit the racist emotions of many in the public?

what is it fellas? a combination of them? or all of the above?

Buddy, when they say take two, they mean two tablets, not two boxes ;)

    Floyd's pretty damn good.

    But the best ever?

    No.

His medical records indicate that he used drugs at least as far back as the Ortiz fight.

How do you explain him having the testosterone of a 175 year old man?

Mayweather is a drug cheat. That takes away from his legacy.

I think Floyd Mayweather is a sensational fighter and between 130-140 lbs, I favor him in most H2H matches against other ATG's that campaigned in those weight classes. In those divisions, he had good size, good pop in both hands (as long as they weren't injured,) sublime reflexes, athleticism, speed and defense. He was the total package at the lighter weight, and much more entertaining from an offensive standpoint.

But unfortunately for him and other modern day greats, it'll be hard for anyone to crack the top 10 of all time IMO.

There's no way I would rate him over these guys:
Robinson, Armstrong, Greb, Pep, Ali, Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Benny Leonard.

Those 8 fighters to me are the greatest P4P to ever live. Than you have guys like Langford, Charles, Moore, Louis and Gans.

There's no shame in being ranked under those guys. HOnestly, even if he faced guys like Williams, Margarito, Martinez and Tzyu, I still don't think it would be enough to crack the top 10 of all time. Those fighters accomplished a lot, and most of them fought and won over 100 bouts.

FLoyd is definitely one of the greatest fighters who ever lived, I just don't have him on the mantle of the greatest of ATG's. His longevity is what really stands out to me, and is the reason I have him rated over guys like Chavez sr and Pernell WHitaker. I have him somewhere in my top 20, which is a marvelous feat for a contemporary boxer.

I don't think popularity or PPV sales should have anything to do with his overall ranking.

The Manassa Mauler Jack Dempsey was essentially the white version of FLoyd Mayweather as far as marketing/profitability goes. He was part of the first million dollar purse in the history of the sport (back in the 20's,) and was making exponentially more money than any other athlete in the world. It didn't hurt that he was also a great fighter to boot. But I still wouldn't put him anywhere near the top 20 all time for other obvious reasons (i.e. his lack of defenses after winning the title.)

I think P4P status should have zero to do with how popular/rich the fighter was and everything to do with how dominant of a fighter they actually were.

    Exactly this.

Once you start bringing externals into the equation it becomes like giving the slow kid a prize for athletics because he "tried".

If Fluid is the best ever then it's a shame because he was still taught a lesson by a one armed man. The so called defense and counter master being taught a lesson in defense and countering. Oh by the way he's not even the best in a decade let alone the best ever:lol:.

I give you robinson...he'd be tough for floyd. I don't know what he looked like as a ww, but if his ability as a past-his-prime 30-something mw is any indication, he musta been one hell of a ww.

duran...no...friggin...way...duran MAYBE belongs in the top 30 of a pfp all time ranking. he lost to every top fighter he faced. his win over leonard was controversial against a very diminished sugar ray.....for the life of me i can't figure out wtf people keep talking about duran like he was such great shakes.

pep lost 3 of 4 against sadler....sadler deserves to be ranked higher.

armstrong was great....i rank him top 15 all time... but certainly not on floyd's level...wasn't he losing to guys like fritzie zivic?

ali is ali...so, i'm not even gonna try... rational arguments simply don't cut it when people are so emotionally involved. ali was a great man and a great icon. floyd was greater as a fighter from a purely technical standpoint.

benny leonard? for chrissakes fella!...sam langford?...i don't think any film even exists of him...same for greb. I don't see how you could even rank a fighter you never seen...kinda like me saying helen of troy was the most beautiful woman in history.

look, I understand how OGs think: it's kinda like when you hear people say stuff like "man, the music today sucks...now, in my day THAT was great music!" ...then they pull out their ethel merman collection...so we'll just have to agree to disagree.

But lemme just say this: i'm not just using the "time machine" argument here. I look at many different factors. The fact is, floyd has consistently DOMINATED the top fighters from numerous weight classes. who else can say that? pep? armstrong? duran?...even SRR in his mid-thirties was struggling with guys like basilio and fullmer....guys not even in floyd's class. floyd in his mid-thirties was dominating guys that were JUST AS GOOD OR BETTER than fullmer and basilio....guys like cotto, canelo, etc...floyd dominated similar or BETTER opposition that srr struggled with at the same stages of their careers. now, i understand srr had a lot more pro fights than floyd, but if you look at floyd's amateur career, does srr really have that many more fights?...and floyd could have been knocking off one bum after the next like srr did for long stretches, but instead, he was facing one champ after the next and MAKING them look like bums.

look at the history of boxing....all the greatest fighters have broken box office records...ali, srl, dempsey, tyson. High ppv numbers is an indication that fans recognize one's greatness.

I don't personally feel he was the greatest ever. I had no problem whatsoever with him saying he was, as he has accomplished a lot. Just like I didn't have a problem with Muhammad Ali (albeit after the fact) saying it, LeBron saying he was the best in the word, Jordan saying no one could beat him. If you back up what you say in the ring, say what you want.
