I feel like if fraizer fought in a later era he'd be definitely more well known as hes a dawg and that left hook is just iconic along with his entertaining style

Frazier is known WAY more than just "the guy who fought Ali three times". Lol

Not really in the public eye he’s Ali’s rival more than anything else by far. Relatively few people today know much else.

If we're talking public eye, then we're not going to go much further than three names. Ali, Tyson, and Mayweather- But if we're talking about anybody who knows just a bit about boxing, I see that Frazier is much more often remembered as "The man who beat The Greatest". No knowledge of the losses to Ali, no knowledge of the losses to Foreman, I see him almost exclusively being memorialized as "the man who beat the man".

I think in the eyes of the general public, Frazier's losses to Foreman hurt his image. But to those people who know boxing? He is an ATG. Best body puncher ever at HW, best at cutting the ring vs movers, and one of the best left hookers ever. Beating a 29 year old Ali is a better win than the single best win of majority of ATG heavyweights.

The only minor blemish on his record is not beating big punchers like Shavers and Lyle. I do believe Frazier would have beaten them. He certainly didn't duck anyone. However, he ended up facing the biggest hitter of all who was a stylistically nightmarish match up for him.

    Great fighter nonetheless.

Speaking for myself, Joe Frazier is a lot more than just a man who beat Ali. Don't forget he held the two belts for a few years before losing to Foreman.
Also giving Ali absolutely hell in his latter years when thought of as washed up.

And to be fair, the average person under 35 years old knows nothing about boxing. Many of my friends and acquaintances couldn't tell you who Larry Holmes, Lennox Lewis or Michael Spinks were. They have heard certain names like Fury, Mike Tyson, Ali etc. because they are cultural icons but the average person knows nothing about boxing or its history. Boxing hasn't been a major mainstream sport in North America since the mid 90's. Its bigger in Britain but even most Brits i know follow football (soccer) and only a certain percentage follow boxing.

    Hi Buddy.
Excellent synopsis on a truly great fighter, and man, no good posters going on about " the general public " they prob wouldn't know about great racing drivers, basketball players, great swimmers, in detail, so let's leave them out , as for the boxing pundits, writers, the boxing fraternity, we/they all know he was once in a lifetime HW, his stamina, heart, endurance, will to win, are almost unequalled in the pantheon of HW champs, I for one, have never seen his name blackened on here, or anywhere else for that matter, and amongst the boxing world he is lionised, and rightly so.
stay safe dmt, you make a lot of sense, always have, chat soon.

The average Joe will find it easier to name Jake Paul than Canelo in a line-up. The only names the general public are vaguely familiar with are Ali and Tyson and that’s it. People who actually care even the slightest about the sport know Frazier as the guy who beat Ali.

I do wish we could talk more about his career outside of Ali though. He had a great career even without his main rival - though that perhaps elevated it from great to all-time great.

In much of the stuff that's been written about Frazier, from Howard Cosell's first autobiography all he way up to Kram's book on Manila, Frazier's anger and hurt over not being given what he thought was his deserved place both historically and in the public consciousness, while Ali was placed on a pedestal both ways, was palpable. But it's like I've said before, Frazier was truly great but he could never be viewed as anything but a prize fighter, while Ali was so much more, and I don't think Joe was capable of fathoming that.

Hey bud… I know your new here but theres some rules. Words like “dawg” “jit” “fam” and other modern slang will not be tolerated. This is unc territory. Treat it as such.

    To answer your question.
anyone who Ali defeated is known as “the guy who Ali beat.” Its tragic but true.

I agree with this, I doubt 20% under 35 could even name the heavyweight champion of the world today. In the 70's and 80's you'd be hard pressed to find people who didn't know who the champ was..
