What gets cemented in the minds of the casual public was his two losses to Ali plus the iconic "down goes Fraizer" by Howard Cosell when big George knocked him down seven times.

This puts the rest of his work in the dark, similar to how Michael Spinks is viewed as the guy who lost to Tyson in ninety seconds, instead of being the one who dethroned Holmes.

Perception overtakes reality as time passes.

Yes, I'd go so far as to say that most in my generation (born in the 70's) only can name Ali and Tyson and perhaps Holy, Foreman, Lewis, Pac and Mayweather. Most ATGs are forgotten. Only Ali and Tyson are true household names that everyone will know.

Joe Frazier holds the greatest single victory in the history of the division.

If you’re basing that totally on it being two undefeated champs in the ring, maybe. But I have never put it on that humongous a pedestal plus two other meetings sort of proved for history who the superior fighter was.

ANYBODY who followed boxing in the 70's won't ever forget "Smokin Joe" Frazier! IMHO the toughest, most lion-hearted dude to step in a ring AND an honorable class act as a person. (Sadly, his anger over Ali never subsided and it did tarnish him to a degree--but you can understand why!!)

    It’s the first I’ve heard that he’s been “ forgotten. “

Frazier was in a steeper decline at that point than Ali. His style, his health, his appetite for partying. Plus, he almost had Ali out of there in the third fight.

That said, name me someone who beat a better heavyweight than Frazier beat in 3/8/71.

I’ve seen ATG HW lists where Frazier isn’t even in the top 12 or 15, sadly he is being forgotten and less and less people aside from the hardcore fans will remember as time passes.

Modern boxing can be good if you pick the right fights to watch. I watched Usyk - Fury live, and I definitely was entertained.

You know damn well Ali had just spent thirty years in exile. I mean, it’s not like he’d returned & immediately beaten two of the top-ranked contenders of the day. Just look at how easily Frazier mopped the floor with him, too. He was clearly washed up.

He’s my favourite fighter of all-time, & I’ve never heard of him.
